The Wigan Chairman has also come out and criticised the Sunderland fans for the chanting during their game vs Sunderland over the weekend.

Much as I dislike the Mackems, surely McClean is in no position to complain when you consider he's regularly stoked the fire over the years.

what ever hes done there is no excuse for sectarian abuse, if a black player was abused to the extent he has there would be hell on.

I agree but I don't like the way McClean goes out of his way to play the victim. This is the same guy who posted a photograph of himself wearing a balaclava with his children, along with the caption "History lesson".

So sectarian abuse is fine because he stoked the fire? That’s not really how these things work

You don't think posting a photograph of himself wearing a balaclava on Instagram was an attempt to stoke the fire?
I don’t know if it was or wasn’t TBH, I don’t know him personally. All I know about him is that he’s taken an absolutely insane amount of personal abuse for about a decade purely because he chooses to exercise his freedoms. If he did give a bit back to those who hammer him week after week after week, well I can’t say I blame him.

If an English player played for a club in the league of Ireland and posted their support for groups like the UDA for example, eulogiesed characters such as Michael Stone and Johnny Adair, do you think there would be a backlash?

Or if ROI were playing Germany in a world cup game and the same English player posted a photograph of themself wearing a Germany top, you again wouldn't regard that as an attempt to goad?

Has anyone actually done those things?

My understanding is that he believes the British are colonisers/occupiers in his country of birth.

I think he has a right to believe that and express those opinions and others are able to disagree with him and express their opinions back at him in a measured way.

Shouting anti-catholic/Irish abuse is not acceptable.

No, because unlike McClean most players have the sense not to bring sectarianism into football.
I don’t think not wanting to wear a poppy is bringing sectarianism into football. Those hurling abuse from the stands because of his stance, however, well that may be different. I think if he’d been left alone and his position respected, then maybe things could’ve been different.

Instead, every autumn he’s subjected to dog’s abuse. Put yourself in his shoes for a moment and think about how you’d feel or behave or react to thousands of people screaming abuse and sh*tty tabloids whipping up a storm from the gutter.

People are so precious about James McClean.

Has he done that?

He's refused to wear a poppy, nobody should be made to wear them, and he's defended a football team from Ireland singing a song which you'd hear many times a year over there, it was number 1 in the charts.

It was Sunderland fans initially who took umbrage with him not wearing a poppy and I would support anyone's right not to wear one.

McClean however ever since has been quite happy to make his Anti-English and pro-IRA feelings known, whilst not taking into consideration the fact that there will be plenty of English supporters who will respect the fact that he chooses not to wear a poppy.
