It's time this lot went....

FPTP is another issue

I believe that retaining the monarchy is poisonous because it legitimises inherited wealth and privilege as a "good thing". And to an extent Liz and her brood are the least of the problem. It is also unhealthy for those placed under the media spotlight due to an accident of birth.

I believe stupid Charlie will do more to end the Royals than us Republicans ever could.

I think she's the granddaughter of the Duke and Duchess of Kent. They've been to the Queen's annual Christmas lunch in the past. I don't know, but I'd be surprised if they didn't have a big country pad somewhere.

IMO that constitutes being 'hangers on'.... but we may well have a different view on that (y)(y)
As long as they are contributing to society then I wouldn't consider them a hanger on. Even if they do have the cheek to live in a big house. BTW I think they live in Knightsbridge.

They probably do have a nice pad but that’s because her mum married an art dealer and runs companies in the arts, not because the queen gave her a country home or a wad of cash. Surely takes more than going to the queens annual lunch to be a hanger on?

“ Career

After she left Gordonstoun (where she had art class), she was desperate to come to London and earn money, starting in 1984 at Christie's auction house in their Contemporary Department .

Lady Helen worked with the art dealer Karsten Schubert between 1987 and 1991, behind the front desk, and was credited with discovering Rachel Whiteread and Gary Hume, but confessed in a television interview that she had turned down representing artist Damien Hirst.

For 17 years, Lady Helen was a fashion ambassador and muse to Giorgio Armani.”

Lady Helen and her husband have a net worth of £10 million. From art dealing mainly I guess. Which I assume is taxable. They are certainly paying corporation tax on that

Fair enough mate. I guess I was assuming that they probably do have an inherited family home somewhere too, passed down the lines since 1672 - or whenever. (Even so, I doubt the wealth is JUST because she married an art dealer. Expect there's plenty of family money too).

That was KIND of what I was meaning by hangers on... but I'd also say being on the Queen's annual Christmas lunch list helps too!

I always find it surprising just how many of these massive houses there are around the country, which have been passed down since their ancestors did the king a favour way back when!

Also.... I'm not denying that I wouldn't mind having one, if one of my ancestors had been the King William III mate back in 1702!! - Luck of the draw I guess.

I was (quite possibly wrongly) assuming that there would be a big hereditary estate somewhere too. Did Lady Helen have a brother who got that maybe?

Monarchy doesn’t bother me at all and I am far from a cap doffer. I can’t see them being “toppled” as mentioned above because the public overwhelmingly supports them in pretty much every poll conducted that I can find
Have you got any links?

Interesting comment because even when I’ve discussed this with a few Tories there is often a neutrality rather than overwhelming support.

Various ones there around supporting the monarchy, future of the monarchy, opinion of the queen etc

These all touch in support levels etc too

Don’t think I’ve ever seen a poll saying monarchy should be abolished that wasn’t from a Scottish website or a daft local paper etc, I’m sure they exist but majority of people in this country are very patriotic - look at how many people end up sharing Britain first cobblers because they use the flag or the poppy to implant their vile messages, and how nationalism fuelled brexit, and the monarchy is all tied in closely with that

Thanks I will have a read.

Ah the traditional way out of the gutter for anyone born into poverty then.

Bless her soul.
I KNEW that would be the response just knew it.

“oh they are scrounging off the state”

“actually no, they are earning their own money and paying their own taxes”

“yes but in an elitist field”
So it’s gone from not liking them because they are scrounging off the state to not liking them because they aren’t a steelworker or binlady.

Some interesting findings there.

From the polls you get the impression that the current queen is very popular but that there is less certainty going forward and one of the polls suggests the main popularity is in the over 55 age group.

It probably mirrors the Brexit situation.

So things could change over time, there is hope yet.

I think that’s largely because she is the queen of that generation, and the figurehead of the royals. Other royals haven’t been at the forefront and these people didn’t have the events unfold in their lifetime as QE2 was coronated in 53. The royal wedding was popular (despite those saying it wasn’t) and people had parties, a day off work and bunting out in my street. I can see any future coronation going the same way as it’s a chance to celebrate part of our nations identity and global interest is high.

I think one of the key differences between the two monarchies is the relative humbleness, and ability to relate to the majority of citizens, of the Swedish and Danish royals as opposed to our monarchy, especially our multiple "hangers on" who continue to enjoy privilege few of us can dream about simply because they're 47th in line to the throne.
You can walk up to the king of belgiums front door and knock to see if he wants to come out for a game of kirby. Not sure what he would say, but there is no security to speak of at all.

Does he have a couple of suitable kerbs local to the palace, or would you have to travel a bit ?
