Isaiah Jones

I've been his biggest critic in recent months but he seemed to have a bit of confidence back in his game last night. The formation definitely works in his favour but I'd also like to think that Carrick has had a little word in his ear too about expressing himself a bit more. That's how it looked last night anyway. Hopefully he can kick on from there and get some consistency back in his game again.

He has made a big impact in our two recent away wins, no coincidence. He is a young player in his second season, if we get step back and let him play or get behind him as in one of Yusuf's songs last night he will deliver. The cross for the second goal was a gem. His breakaway for what should have been a 4th goal from Giles was rapier like. And maybe some understanding is being built now with Tommy Smith who is finding his feet attacking wise as well as defensively.
Listen to the extended highlights with the Hull commentary team there is no doubt they felt he threatened them all night.
"Isaiah Jones A-ha... makes the Boro sing."

yes, i watched the game with the hull commentary and bryan hughes was saying how jones is the one who looks most threatening. confidence is huge in football (especially for wingers when the onus/pressure is on them to take on their man), i think jones is showing that bravery again and i think he could have a huge say on how we look to turn things around.

I hope the ‘pass sideways and safe’ brigade don’t drive him away. We lack creativity at times and he can provide it on his day. Sometimes teams do a job on him, sometimes he’s quiet but plenty of times he makes the difference.

Just because he can open things up and win matches doesn’t mean the critical spotlight should be on him and him alone.

Funny how we see different games, thought he was average last night - better when we went 2-1 up and a bit more space opened up for him, but first half especially was frustrating.

He misses Crooks being there.....and it was noticeable how much running Crooks did when he came on (Carrick instruction or thinking "sh*t, place is at risk here" 🤷🏻‍♂️)

Interesting how far up the pitch Jones was playing, almost like a 4-3-3. Few good results, confidence will come with him. Just going through a dip in form, happens to all players.

yeah, don't get me wrong he's still far from where he was during that spell he had last season but i can just see little glimpses now which we haven't seen for a while, i just hope that confidence continues to grow again.

He was right back on top of his game at Wigan - he and Duncan Watmore took them apart down opposite flanks. That was only a couple of weeks back. last night his centre made one goal and he was involved in so many of our best attacking moves. Just let him get on with it. He scares opponents.

didn't you think to 'support' him during his period of a lack of confidence - and when teams were doubling & trebling up on him?

that's what supporters do, isn't it.

yeah you'd think so wouldn't you? the thing is i do support every boro player through thick and thin (probably too positive at times), but that doesn't mean i can't question a player's performance does it?

fair play to you if as a 'supporter' you've never criticised a player before.

This is a summary of what Michael Carrick had to say [about Isaiah an Paddy] in his Hull Media Conference:>>>>>

Isaiah and Paddy?

Asked about Isaiah Jones and Paddy McNair, and the expectations placed on their shoulders [especially Jones after last seasons tremendous performances] - he was quick to answer that Jones is still a young player and relatively inexperienced - but there is reason to "expect the positives". Clearly he understands the pressure on him and that his game - management will improve. Jones has hardly missed a match since he joined the first team and Carrick understands the issues which that can bring. As for our Northern Ireland International - Carrick said "oh yes I know Paddy - he was my runner....". It appears he has "had a chat" with Paddy and added "when you`re not winning, football can be hard at times".

Something to consider going forward? Jones to switch to the left wing and have Watmore wide right?

It's where Jones played when he first broke through under Warnock and wide right is supposed to be Watmores natural position.

you don't though - the proof is is in your Commets - should a player have a lack of confidence you start to slag him off - there is no 'thick and thin' - you don't support 'every boro player'.

To put this in context Roofie - the questions were asked separately - the question about Paddy McNair - was about whether he knew Paddy from his time at Man U - and that is why he was saying yes he was a veteran and Paddy a young player and actually they played together as central defenders and that is why he said "he was my runner." Carrick's legs had gone.

Yes I know.

slagging him off is going a bit far mind. being his 'biggest critic' doesn't necessarily mean i've been vocal about his form, more an observation to myself or in conversation with my dad! point i'm making is it's great to see him getting back to his best.

I like Jones, I think with his confidence back, with a manager like Carrick he is the biggest threat in our team. I know he won't score the most goals but he creates chances, he draws fouls which create opportunities. A confident Jones is a scary to play to face as an opposition player.
