Hope he gets the right support from the club, teammates and fans.

Despite being written off as shyte by a section of our support I'm really pleased Carrick / Boro took the correct course of action, giving him time to get his head together......and keeping his issues in house.

Hope he can come back and be the player he was season before last. And against Hull.

Sometimes there are just things bigger and more important than football👍

If I was a footballer I wouldn't have social media for my own mental health, some of the things said about footballers is disgusting, just because they're paid a good wage, doesn't justify what some things are said, some things are beyond criticism.

Same can be said in 'normal' life on a much watered down version though.

Social media is a minefield, especially how young most people are active on it, both sending/ receiving messages or content.

Sounds like he's had an awful time of it this past year.

Life is a rollercoaster of ups and downs, let's hope both off and on the pitch his life starts to get much better.

Fans are always going to criticise footballers if their performance is poor. It is when that criticism becomes personal and beyond football it becomes unacceptable.
If I remember correctly, most of the comments about Jones were about his ability, or perceived lack of it. It was only when info about his private life were made public that the comments seemed out of order. To a lesser degree, Crooks got the same when we didn't know about his hernia.
At the time it was just more fans expressing their view on a players ability, correctly or otherwise.
Twitter was probably much worse than this site though, so not really referring to that.

Some of the stick he received on this board was disgraceful.
Is it only disgraceful when its certain players who get the stick? People like Rudy Gestedes, Britt Assomobalongas mental healths don't count as they were widely and regularly hammered by a whole fanbase. Never remember anyone sticking up for them.

Its awful what Jones has gone through and hopefully he gets the help he needs but theres a fine line here and you cant expect football fans not to be critical.

Im not Jones's biggest fan and certainly criticised his crossing and finishing in the past even at his best. To be honest i haven't seen anything that was disgraceful more people wanting more from him which is understandable.

His desire was constantly questioned and he was called lazy on a number of occasions. Predictions that he would be in league two or the Scottish championship before long. A quick search on here and you would find plenty of posts which went far beyond 'wanting more from him'.

I'm not even going to bother searching for the abuse. I know it exists as did the abuse of Tav. My beef with some Boro fans is that they don't appreciate that their criticism of a player is, by extension, a criticism of the manager who has selected them. Jones was abused before he'd even kicked a ball in some matches.

Though to be fair, doesn't he say himself in that podcast that the desire wasn't there? It was the reasons for that which weren't known at the time.

Strikers criticized.. when we weren't scoring, goalkeepers criticized when we were conceding more than we were scoring.. Tav criticised because he wasn't putting he chances he created away (3 or 4 chances a game)

I agree, criticising a player is often the same as criticising a manager for picking him. But is that such a bad thing? We often question a manger's choice of players (sometimes to only look foolish after the event when they score the winner).

I would also question where does criticism of a player's performance becomes abuse?
Did Jones receive overly harsh criticism or unfair criticism? Maybe. Particularly with the benefit of hindsight.
But abuse? I'm not so sure.

He burst onto the scene and he was CLASS a drop in form and the know it alls are saying he's finished he was never that good. non league etc etc etc

He'll be back and better for the experience.

You're right, a lot of the criticism was ridiculous, he hadn't suddenly become a really poor player overnight. Luckily Carrick and the club know the full story and have patience and trust that he will come good.
It can't be denied though that from the outside looking in there was always a possibility that his first season could have been the exception rather than the rule.
