Is this a sign that Clayton is leaving?

He was very good 4 years ago, he stunk the place out in the prem when he was shown up for what he is, he’s been chasing shadows ever since and he is an example of why we’re struggling now - £1M a year on a 4 year contract for a non goal scoring plodding midfielder.

Good pro other than adding a bit of timber from his peak. Can’t hit a barn door like. His effort v Reading for Forshaw’s goal summed up his shooting ability.

Warnock signed 13 players and took 6 more in on loan in the season he took Cardiff up.
He also moved 11 out and loaned another 10 out.
He started in the same clarts at Cardiff as he was here and kept them up.
His churn of the squad was extreme.

Selling Assombolonga, Fletcher, Saville, McNair; not renewing Johnson and replacing with better players at better value, to play with the younger crop, is far from a problem for Warnock, especially with a long window, another in January and hell of a long season.
Back your man Coluka and what he has done before so very recently.

It is a far bigger risk to keep what you know has been so utterly rubbish for seasons now.

I do back him and If he can do it I am all for it. I understand there will be more availability to select from in part due to covid and the state some clubs are in. I can see a period of stand off with some of the better players till nearer deadline day. Premier league teams will mostly only agree to loans after the initial window shuts. If the season starts at the end of August or even 12 September we may have no choice to start with some of what we have and the churn start part way into the season. If we start off badly, till anydeals are done that in itself presents its own problems

A worry though will be lots of footballers thinking their values are greater than they realistically will be. I really cant see many clubs offering sizeable enough contracts to the likes of Britt, Fletch, Saville, McNair. As grateful as I am for Howson triggering an extension of his contract, he will have done so to continue to receive his current wage for another year rather than take a big cut elsewhere. I fear those mentioned may want to see their contracts out here, and leave on a free, that, or we part subsidise their wages for a period elsewhere.

I trust Warnock to do what he thinks is right for the club and whatever he approves of I will support him for sure. It is going to be an interesting window for sure.

It's a bummer that Clayton's going and we've still got bang average saville stuck in the team. We would have been far better off selling McNair and saville and giving Clayton another two more years. One of the reasons we have been so mediocre in the championship since our return is failure to play our better players like Clayton and Tav and instead playing the mediocre signings of Pulis and monk. Jon obi Mikel for **** sake.

Saville has been great in the 3 wins so far for Warnock. Much more of use to the team than Clayton could be presently

Actually you're right. I just watched the video of obi Mikel the club put out. Every touch. The man was obviously a champions League level genius. Hard to believe some of the wizardry I'm seeing. How did we lose 6 in a row with this fella in the side.

It is quite remarkable that he only scored 1 goal, in all competitions, in his entire 6 seasons at the club (not forgetting he was bizarrely allowed to take a penalty at Oldham).

None of our players were really good against Stoke and reading. Really good means beating **** teams like Stoke or reading 3 or 4 nil. Howson is the only one of our midfielders to show anything like competent championship form, mainly because he has been moved out of midfield.

Remember hit shot that wacked Adomah in the face prior to the Forshaw winner against Reading in the Promotion season. An Adam Clayton classic that one was

Well their isn’t really any point of me having this debate if that is your attitude. To suggest none of our players were no good is just ludicrous really.

Nonsense. Has a goal keeper had a poor day if you don't put three past your opposition? What about CBs are they automatically rubbish if you win 2-0 or 2-1? It's a team sport, played by individuals. Assess the individuals for individual merit. Savile got through a huge amount of ground and as a midfielder that is a key asset, he delayed, denied, deflected and defended Readings attempts to attack on a regular basis. He did the dirty work and did it well. He had a decent passing match in both those games, retaining the ball well. He also made some smart runs to pull defenders and midfielders out of position to make space for other players. He wasn't perfect but they are some of his best performances in a Boro shirt and if he plays like that every week he will first team on the team sheet, even if some fans expect something else from him

Great servant to the club but time takes it's toll, fond good bye Adam and thank you for your contribution over the years.
Best of luck in the future
Not sure why anyone would want to question or knock his contribution.

The man has played champions league - 59 times in fact, and won it, well done you!

Clayton was a box to box midfielder when we signed him, and AK converted him into a ball winning number 4 type who sat in front of the back 4 , i think he's still a decent midfielder but at the moment he doesn't fit into the teams shape as i think Warnock wants mobility and energy in the midfield 3, i think Clayton in a decent side as a 4 with proper wingers in front of him in a 4-3-3/4-5-1 is still a very useful player, his biggest problem will be the comedown in wages i suspect, he re-signed when we were in the prem, and he's probably on a wage we just can't sustain
