The irony is socialist values actually improve quality of life, better health, less crime. Looking after yourself in the head and now could impact you later down the line

Why

why are people having children if they can’t afford them? Why do we pay child benefit as almost an incentive to have them?

That is indeed one of the reasons why we pay child benefit which, until very recently, was paid to the mother of every child, regardless of how rich or poor they were: Society needs children, who become the workers of tomorrow.

If you accept society needs children and you don't want to finance child benefit, then you have two options. The rich like you can adopt the surplus poor children whose feckless parents can't cope - and/or the rich must have more children of their own. Which would you prefer?
