Is It A Derby?

I've never been able to figure out what they don't like about it being a derby. It adds something to it, there's always a bit more intensity, the fans are different and people really don't want to lose. It's more fun. Why would you pretend you don't want it to be a derby when it is better that it is?

As has been said, if it didn't have extra meaning then why does the topic of whether it is a derby or not dominate their attention when we play them? They think they are superior than us in some way because we see it as more of a derby than they do but we can let them have that superiority because the only other thing they have is attendances.

They do think it's a derby and they do care, they just like to say it isn't as it makes them feel superior/a bigger club.

"I know that you really care and it means lots to you, but it means nothing to us, as we're above that".

A lot of them will say it just because it so clearly winds Boro fans up.

People get rattled by the comments every time it comes around.

The day the mackam derby came to town
People came to watch them all around
Alas, we didn't see who won the match
Because the supergroup The Who
Swooped down from the moon
And squirted tartar lemon in our snatch

This is pretty much it. It makes them feel they're a bigger club when they can say "tinpot Boro are just desperate for us to acknowledge them but we don't care".

I find it very strange to be honest. It's understandable that they see Newcastle as their main rivals, as they're the closest club (of a similar size) to them. If Sunderland were the closest club to us though and vice versa, I wouldn't be saying "we don't care about Newcastle, the Tees/Wear derby is the only true NE derby". As football fans surely we want as many rivalries and games with added spice as possible.

Because their record against us over the last few decades has been poor. The new generation of mackems who've appeared during that time obviously lack the testicular fortitude to take a few beatings and the banter that goes with it.

If they ever string a few good results together against us, their tune about it being a derby will soon change.

There are not many football teams I can say I truly despise but with Blunderland I will make an exception. In fact they are the only team I despise. I even prefer Leeds Utd, Newcastle and Derby, if truth be told. When I hear that obscene and reprehensible 'paedo' chant I look across and see and hear many fans, not just a small minority, a large majority chanting it.

I try to think that there must be some fans of theirs who will be mortified. However, seeing and hearing so many grown men chanting it in front of children, I fear the decent ones are very few in number.

At the end of the day we are a better team. We have in recent times won more trophies, appeared in more finals, beaten them more times then they have beaten us - And I believe that the UEFA Cup Final is one they will never get to.

I would like to see Newcastle do well for three reasons. It puts the NE on the national football map. It means Blunderland remain in their shadow, which must be so hard for them to accept, and they cannot boast about being the top NE team because the facts speak for themselves. Newcastle look a good bet for a trophy this season, which will push the knife even further into their envious chest.

'Boro stand tall and proud. We have a strong sense of who we are and that will always be.

Yet they are desperate to have Leeds class them as a derby.

I am quite youngish and in my time as a boro fan I have attended and seen my club play in 5 cup finals including a european cup final. I have watched my team win silverware. I have travelled across europe to grounds I never thought I would get the chance to visit to watch my team play. I have watched my club sign some of the biggest names in world football.

If I was a sunderland fan of the same age I wouldn't have witnessed anything other than my team reaching and losing one cup final. The comparison is not even close. Furthermore, this is the highest level they have competed at for 5 years.

How is this our cup final and only just another game to them?

We'll just never be big enough for them to accept us as rivals 😪

What do we have to do to make them hate us? I mean, some of them have even said on their board that apparently when they sing "we hate Boro" they don't actually mean it. They sing "we hate cockneys" but that doesn't mean every London club is a rival (this is what one Sunderland fan actually said).

The stupidity astounds me 🤦‍♂️

It was a while ago but some on here may remember.
Against opposition that was clearly a class above them they won that cup.
I Hope it isn't too long before they do it again.
The Papa John's trophy was designed for smaller clubs like Sunderland.

It’s not a derby, it means a bit more if we beat them, same as the games against Leeds, Newcastle and Derby last season but that’s as far as it goes.

I’m pleased we don’t have a proper derby, it’s embarrassing to see how the likes of Sunderland and newcastle obsess over each other, not sure why any football fan would be bothered about any other team but their own

Newcastle and Sunderland isn't a "proper derby" if you're viewing it that way.

Whether one side cares more or not, it's still a derby

If we played Hartlepool, it would be a derby, despite most Boro fans wishing nothing but positivity on them.
