Incredible! Johnson announced 54m more to Ukraine yet…

Tell that to the single mother of two who's a keyworker using food banks...

For example.
We are talking about people who have lost everything here, no home, no family, no food, no access to clean water in some areas. It’s hardly comparable. Are we expected to just leave them to die?

Regardless it is possible as one of the richest countries in the world we can provide our share of foreign aid whilst ensuring no one has to use a food bank in the uk

That is exactly the point, we can and should do both - we (the government) choose not to as there is nothing in it for them.

Not sure why people are making it an us or them narrative. The money announced by Boris is chicken feed for the government and isn’t at all going to influence their decision to do more about the cost of living or not.

Stay kind.
100% agree - but I think this is by design, try to re-direct anger and ill-feeling to the recipients of "our money" whilst we're all struggling - the same happens with immigration

The two things are unrelated, cost of living crisis and a war in Ukraine. Our government should be able to chew gum and walk at the same time. They should be dealing with both situations, thats why we have ministerial posts.

Johnson jumped on the Ukraine bandwagon to further his political ambition and curry favour when he was loosing a grip on the tory party. I don't really care why he supplied arms, only that he did. Sometimes bad people do good things for the wrong reasons. As AM said, our response to the refugee arm of the crisis was appalling, but it was appalling because the tories think thats what their voting base want. Their voting base needs to tell them they don't want that.

The cost of living crisis in this country should be managed also. We have plenty of cash slopping round our economy so that people don't have to go hungry or cold. It's the bare minimum a government should do, feed, house and protect its citizens. Anyone who suggests we should help those at home before Ukraine are falling into the tory trap of blaming the wrong people for what ails us. Divide, distract and set brother against sister. Let's not be falling for it. Let's demand that our representatives, spending our money do the right thing. If they don't, make your voice heard at the ballot box.

On the one hand we have board members thinking we should let Ukranians starve and be ousted from their homes because they can't afford to pay their bills. On the other we have board members who think Starmer is just another tory and refuse to vote for Labour "whilst that man is in charge". If I was a tory party member I would be rubbing my hands with glee, their message is working.

Are we just expected to let to people in our country die because we are sending our money that could help them to a country ran by a comedian?

The common man and woman doesn't give a **** about the politics of it all. All they will see is newspaper headlines stating Ukraine have been given more millions and millions and they'll wonder where their share is.

If we (or Ukraine, with our and others' help) don't stand up to Putin, then he will just keep doing it again and again.

Just ignoring this problem (or any other problem) won't make it go away, it will likely just get worse. In this instance Putin will just keep pushing the boundaries further and further, it's happened countless times over the course of history with him and other historical ****..

We're paying this price largely due to our reliance on energy imports, which is a failure of our own doing (or those who have been elected).

We may be paying more in expenditure than other countries, but that's to make up for the lack of other aid we're providing.

Like @American_Mary says, loads of that expenditure is going on arms, which we create ourselves, it's not exactly money going out of the door, but it is money going into lucrative contracts (and major/ rich companies), and obviously, the by-product of that is keeping some in jobs etc.

Current Electricity Prices
Norway 11p/kWh
USA 13p/kWh
France 15p/kWh
UK 26p/kWh

Our government using the immediate cause of price increases to try and cover the underlying one and as an excuse for not managing the situation.

And your bias knows no bounds, bless you too. Have a nice day.
There was plenty of accusations of corruption in the Ukrainian government before theis war kicked off. There’s been blatant corruption involving £billions going on right in front of your eyes during the pandemic, something like this would be chicken feed. JVM certainly has it right in it’s a really odd number.

No, but the money sent to Ukraine isn't the reason for people struggling. They are unrelated events.

You're correct that a lot of people will be up in arms about this, and the cynic in me believes it is often done that way on purpose to divert attention away from those in power and towards others. Sadly it also shows a lack of critical thinking on the part of the average person (altho not entirely unexpected when people are desperate and are hoping for change).

Ask yourself this question - given that the 2 events are unrelated, what is the right thing to do? I hope most people would agree to help Ukraine, as well as do something about the issues faced at home.

The only issue I have with Boris being in the Ukraine is that it is the first time we've seen or heard from him for about a month. If he was present and contributing to the discussion on the cost of living crisis in the UK then his Ukraine visit would be fine. People need help and they need the leader of the country to let them know that they aren't going to be in absolute poverty come winter and on the brink of a massive recession. This visit to Ukraine is for Boris, not the UK and not even for Ukraine. Less than £60m is going to do nothing significant. It's not an amount that could help lower our energy bills, it's just a number he can get away with announcing to promote Boris.
