Important Message - Direct Messages to End

We wanted to let you know that we will be ending the use of Direct/Private Messages over the next few days on fmttmboro.

There will be several other changes coming into effect also over the next few weeks. These changes are in order for us to comply with the UK's new Online SafetyAct, which makes us legally responsible to reduce harmful content and make online spaces safer.

We don't really have any choice but to make these and other changes in order to make the forum as safe as possible. Hopefully, the changes will not be too disruptive.

From next week, or as soon as we can figure out how to do it, we will be stopping all direct/private messages between users.

We will be continuing reporting and hope that communications will still be easy to maintain to admin and moderators.

The guidance for the Online Security Act makes it clear that Private Messaging could be used for harassment, scams, or sharing harmful content outside of public moderation. ie It is hidden from moderation and therefore from safeguarding eyes. You will see this function disappearing all over the net this month.

Some sites overseas are deploying AI tools to keep an eye on Direct Messaging – but just how successful and compliant this is remains to be seen and it costs a fair amount of money, Also it means messages are no longer private.

The forum is now Over18 only for users. The Terms have already been changed and soon new users will be asked to confirm they over 18 when signing up.

Again we are being pressed into this change because much of the new Act revolves around protecting minors. Especially from any potentially harmful content etc. This will greatly reduce risks. Obviously we are not a high risk zone but I am sure we would all agree with keeping the net safe for children.

I have been informed that many football sites will be stopping all non football discussion – we are hoping to avoid this – but we will have to monitor the situation as this act is a first step and we have been told that vigilance will only increase in the future and the onus is now very much on us to take responsibility.

Over 18s only helps us meet legal requirements around child safety and content moderation. Many of the new laws focus on protecting children from harmful content, so restricting posting access to adults significantly lowers compliance risks while still allowing people to read discussions.

We will be asking everyone that is an existing user to confirm they are over 18.

This is what it is all about :-
The Online Safety Act was introduced by the UK government to protect people from harmful content online. It places legal duties on forums, social media platforms, and other online services to proactively prevent and remove illegal content, including:
- Hate speech & threats
- Child sexual abuse material (CSAM)
- Terrorist content
- Scams and fraud
- Encouragement of self-harm or suicide

Crikey, whilst applauding the aims of the Online Safety Act the devil really is in the detail.

My reading of it is - if we behave ourselves all should be fine and dandy.
It’s not a lot to ask - (ahem….memo to self!!)

Would be a real shame to lose any non footy contributions.

Genuine question...do you have to close DMs? I would have thought any issues with leaving them open would be between the individuals concerned, rather than the website and its owners?
No they now fall under the responsibility of the site owner now. That has been really stressed to us. You will find Direct Messages disappearing from most forums or no longer private.

You can see from the list at the end of my post that we don't really have a problem on here with most of the harmful content. And ofcom realises that. But you can understand why many forums will start to insist on content being only about their specialist subject eg cycling forum about cycling, football about football. It gets rid of many of the grey areas etc. Suddenly moderation is having to be ramped up everywhere and that would make it a lot easier.
Talking to other football forums and some have already told their members/posters that they will be football only from now on.

Fair enough
Just wondering how/when you might make that decision

Is there no way of formally expanding the forum's remit to permit wider discussion? E.g., this forum is for football, politics, film/TV, WeeGord's Friday beer and music thread plus some content relating to crisps?

The fact that other forums are divided up into different sections means they will just shut the other elements down. That is the easy bit.

I find this stupid and is the term I am looking for, woke? If it wasn't for me having an outlet on fmttm a couple of years ago, I would be in a much worse state than I am now.

It is about a bunch of likeminded people, not just football. Well I will not discuss Friends of films on here anymore. I hope I don't offend anyone. Winky

edit - not a dig at you Rob just our useless society

Someone sort Nobby out with a fake ID!

The idea is to try and protect children sadgit - it is an attempt to make it harder to post anything that could be harmful and protect them.
Obviously it came as a real shock when football message board and small forums everywhere found out that the Act included them also.

To be honest we are all seeing how it goes - hopefully it will be OK. But if it becomes too onerous then many of us will jack it in.
We really do hope you won't all be too inconvenienced and moreover that you help us in making these changes.

Does this mean we can now swear? Because "That new midfielder we've just bought just flipping well doesn't cut it" doesn't quite have the cut & thrust of modern football
