I think this is a throw back to header tanks for old heating systems. Bathrooms would usually take their cold feed from the header tank that sits in the dusty old loft - invariably without a lid. That's why people shouldnt drink it.

My Mrs the other day….that kettle doesn’t heat the water like our last kettle
I mean WTF.
She adds a bit of cold water before proceeding to drink her tea

My mother (back in the 80s when you got things fixed) took the hoover to get it repaired at a local electrical shop...she came back and my dad asked "what was wrong with it? " She said the guy in the shop said it had a " small circus" in the electrics....he had told her it was a "short circuit".
