I would sack him now tbh

I'm now firmly starting to believe we won't make the play offs, and if that is the case then I'm not sure he should be here at the start of next season. Its just all a bit 'meh' at the moment, and has been for most of this season. At least last season we went on a couple of long winning/unbeaten runs, and had the distraction of a fabulous cup run which resulted in the Chelsea home game which will live long in the memory.

As for our squad building, I agree it is laughable. Our defenders are nowhere near good enough when you take a step back and look at it objectively:

Ayling - had barely played in a long time when we signed him
Dijksteel - clubs down the bottom end of the division were sniffing about him last month
van den Berg - fair enough he has potential but he has looked way off it all season
Fry - he's played for us for the best part of a decade and never had a sniff of a bigger club looking at him
Edmundson - we signed him from a Premier League club granted, but his last run of regular football was in league 1
Clarke - has just been sold to a team in the bottom 3
Giles - couldn't get a game for a team in a relegation battle (having said that, last nigh the looked miles ahead of any other left back we've had since he left first time)
Borges - average at best and will no doubt quietly sneak off back to Europe inside the next 12 months
Engel - mental strength of a wet paper bag (and also seems to have vanished off the face of the earth)

And lets not mention Smith, Lenihan and Bangura.

To not bring in at least a first time right back and centre back last month is absolutely scandalous. Ironically the type of player we need at centre back is Lenihan. An organiser who will drag people along with him.

Overall I think our recruitment has been ok with some great additions and some questionable ones, and balancing the books is a must where we are at as a club.

I don’t fully understand where the line is drawn with recruitment and tactics, surely MC has a big say in the type and quantity of player he wants in each position within the rules.

I am perplexed with our leaky/ comedy at times defence, surely this is mainly down to the coaching team not the recruitment

Scott is no way getting away Scott free.

Scott has done some very good business, but he's also failed to plug the glaring holes we have in the team.

Start of January we were desperate for depth in CM, a new CB (knowing Clarke was going) and a RB.

We improved on the RW position, LW position, GK position and LB position.

We are worse off up front with the loss of ELL and replacing him was always going to be very difficult because ELL was brilliant (and far too good for us to be honest)

But the sheer fact we've not improved at CB - in fact I genuinely believe we've got worse as I actually think Clarke is a better CB than Edmundson (even though Clarke wasn't good enough neither) and we've not improved the depth at CM. In fact out situation at CM is now worse as we've blatantly hung Barlaser out to be sold...and no one bought him, so our replacement for Hackney/Morris will no doubt have less confidence than he originally had.

January we have improved positions that weren't priority. And we have failed to improve on the positions that were the priority.
From my earlier post we clearly agree, although Scott is getting away with his fair share of criticism though to me, because the fan base are targeting Carrick alone. He rightly deserves his share of it mind but I don’t see many realising the real elephant in the room, team recruitment rather than profit recruitment.

Comments on this have aged as well as expected. Are we all still entitled or is it getting fairly obvious we are going going backwards under Carrick and have been for a long time?

Defence is not just down to the CB’s and FB’s. It starts from the front players. If players don’t have the inner drive to want to do the hard yards and many a flair player doesn’t, that can’t be readily coached if the will and willingness to do it isn’t there. Players are not robots, Lath and Jones had that innate desire and will, the rest it appears lacking. Doak tries a bit. Azaz goes missing as did Whittaker last night, Giles we know defending isn’t his forte. It doesn’t help when your experienced RB looks finished mind, god I miss Tommy Smith.

At the end of the season MC will have been at the helm for 3 seasons, other than in patches have we actually improved ? It feels like we are definitely going backwards at the moment.
I don’t think he’s improved. That’s the worry, who coaches him?

Good points.

I think we have one too many attack minded players on the pitch. Both full backs should never both be attacking. Simple luthier tweaks but we won’t change

Not for getting rid but he should be judged at end of the season. He can still get us up if the penny drops for him and sorts our our defending.

A lot of it has to be related to how the coaching team are training the team to play in my opinion. I get the feeling that players are being advised to be brave and not to just clear their lines when the team is under the cosh.

Recent examples of this are Morris playing the ball back to Ayling against Preston and Ayling not just hoofing it into touch, and Burgzorg deciding not to just take a touch and hoof it clear in the lead up to Sunderland's equaliser. I do support the idea of trying to play it out from the back and players being brave on the ball but when more or less the entire team is pinned back inside our own box and the loose ball breaks to a Boro player, surely the wisest thing to do would be to just get it clear and relieve the pressure, especially when we're a goal up and have something to defend. Why could the attitude not have been to take no risks, defend what we have at all costs and get to half-time 1-0 up. We've got to get the balance right.

“Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.”

Nothing will change for us until we have a management team that effects change. Based on the evidence presented to us on a weekly basis , our current management team cannot/ will not effect change.
Thusly the responsibility It is down to their management team to effect this change.

This situation should be addressed before our minimum goal (playoffs) becomes unachievable or our trend in results indicates it is likely we will fail to meet our minimum goal.

Change needs to happen in some form immediately as our trend now indicates we will fail to achieve our minimum goal.
