I work with some one who believes in “the flood”

There's no reason to believe an Ark didn't exist. The problem is sorting the fact from the fiction. The bible doesn't even say there were only two of each animal - never mind every animal on the planet.

There was a documentary a while ago where they rebuilt an Ark of the size described in the bible using contemporaneous boat-building techniques and ended up with a much oversized coracle type thing.

It doesn't mean God exists or that a God had anything to do with it, but there's no reason to doubt the story outline.

Especially considering there's fairly solid evidence of major flooding in the ancient middle-east.

I used to work with a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses who believed everything in the OT, including the ark. When you look into it, it's really not possible. At last count, our planet holds something like 8,700,000 species of creatures. Some boat, that.

Now, people can believe what they want - Mrs V for example believes in a God while I don't, and it's not an issue for either of us. But when they begin trying to sell you their beliefs at any given opportunity - and that is part of a JW's agreed practice - then I will begin researching and pointing out deficiencies in their ridiculous explanations.

I do recall one particularly amusing conversation about how dinosaur fossils exist when the earth is apparently only several thousand years old (yep). I was told, straight faced, that fossils are put there by God in order to test our faith. I don't work with them anymore.

I never said what my belief’s are or are not... but I find it incredibly immature of a grown man to take the **** out of someone for what they want to believe.

seriously what harm does it do you if she does think the Ark is real?

as said above a cheery fair enough would have covered it but you have decided to try and get a cheap laugh out of it.

do you take the **** out of kids for believing in Santa?

or what about all those religions? Are they fair game because you have a different opinion

There is no burden of proof on anyone... last time I checked we all had free will to believe in anything we want to.

how about just getting on with your own life and not judge others
Pork chop springs to mind

There was that guy on the old board that said the earth was flat & we were told it was round to make us all feel less special and part of God's plan.

That was a good thread.

I worked with a lad who believes this, I didn’t know him well so when he left I spoke with a colleague who knows him better, she told me he was deadly serious. Seemed like quite a sensible lad. People are strange

What if it’s your belief that taking the **** is right, what then??

Reminds me of when I visited the cathedral in Palma de Mallorca and they claimed to have Jesus’ crown of thorns on display!

To be clear, I wasn't criticising Zorro's colleague for her beliefs, I was criticising your argument that in the absence of evidence it is equally likely that the ark - as appears in the Bible - really existed as opposed to being an allegorical device.

The Bible is a collection of books, written over centuries in many different languages, including Latin and Hebrew.
The books are believed to pertain to a "God".
Proof and interpretation mean there are as many different sects and faiths wo interpret texts [scripts = Hebrew] according to their own beliefs.
Personally I accept that it is a loose chronology of events - written and interpreted by many different authors.
It is a means of justifying ones existence - it doesnt answer any questions. As far as I can see.

As a practicing JW of 35+ years I doubt your recollection of the conversation. The bible does not say how old the “earth” is & no JW worth there salt would make such a stupid remark. Statement at gen 1:1 “ in the beginning God created the heavens and earth.”. The Earth us over 14 billion years old I see nothing in that verse to say it is not? I find it amusing that people have a “pop” at us whilst knowing a little or nothing about us. As for “selling” I’ve never sold my faith for profit to anyone. Mat 10:8 is clear. Anyway I’m a fool for biting enjoy a bit of self flagellation for free.

I know of a man who told me the league table lies. I have never looked at league table the same since

You have the right to believe what you wish.
You have the right to express that belief.
I have the right to argue with that belief.
What ever gets you through life, unless that hurts someone or threatens the previous three sentences.

The universe is about 14billion I think. Earth 4 and some

I am with you on this Zorro, it seems kind of arrogant to suggest you know that a creator does not exist.

The bible was compiled in the 6th century so it was hardly of the time, so to speak. That said the earliest canonical text was compiled 200 years before the birth of christ I had to look this bit up, its called the muratorian canon.

The age of the earth can be calculated from the Bible using genealogy if you interpret it literally.

The ark had several of each animal not 2 and was measured in cubits.

The first I'd heard of the earth being 10,000 years old was from a Bill Hicks routine that people had added up the ages of everyone in the bible & calculated the age of the world from it.

Couldn't take it seriously then, can't take it seriously now.

You can doubt it all you like, the conversation(s) happened just as I recounted. I'm happy to see that these are not apparently central beliefs, but they were of the Witnesses who I knew.

I suppose you can believe anything you want anywhere really, theres been over 10,000 Gods in one form or another, the Christian story is another rehashed or derived from pagan and other short lived idols imho.

I was brought up and indoctrinated at school into the Catholic faith, but I could no longer believe in such a thing any more. I do admire some people who have had faith like MLK jnr, he knew they were going to kill him but he still persisted in the right way to help his friends till they did murder him.

I find the Creationist people crazy tbh, but thats just my opinion. If there is a God that created everything, Im sure he isn't one from current or former religions imho .

I could go on but I as I have in the past but really its isn't very nice of me, plus one of the nicest and best posters on here Bear 66 is a really good bloke who has faith and I wouldn't dream of making him uncomfortable on here.

One fact that amazed me was that some dinasaurs were not even on the planet when others were fossils.

On a God , I believe in something started all this, but why would he give children cancer.

The bible was completed about 96CE when the last surviving apostle (John) completed the book of Revelations whilst imprisoned on Patmos. There are some apocryphal additions in the Catholic Bible written later but these are generally discounted and omitted from the recognized Canon.
