I think Carrick is on the brink

Play the formation that beat Leicester, Chelsea and nearly Villa?
A system set up to have players behind the ball and defend most of the game and try and steal a goal? Fine against Chelsea, Villa, and Leicester, not really the way we should be playing against the likes of Preston or Stoke.

Recruitment hasn't been great but the same can be said for some of Carrick's decision making.

- Sticking with the same formation when it isn't working, rather than switching to wing-backs (which has actually worked for us)

- Persisting with the same style of play, when we don't have the players who are capable of playing that way.

- Playing loan players who aren't good enough and who won't be bothered whether we stay up or go down

- Leaving it too late to make changes during the game, and when he does it's usually a like for like change.

We could get Pep and it still wouldn’t fix the mess going on at the top of the club. Think a few are starting to realise our problems are far deeper than whoever is picking the team

This!

Barlaser and O'Brien we've not got much choice unfortunately. But last home game, both full backs are horrendous and are subbed off, this game, both of the same full backs are back in the starting line up, are both horrendous and are subbed off.

Why?

I was thinking exactly the same regarding Ayling and Thomas.

And neither will be playing for us next season so seems pointless to persist. Dijksteel and Engel are no better mind, so it's as much of a muchness. Our problems run much deeper that having poor full backs.

You preferred today?
No, but I don't think we should be setting up to try and soak up pressure and steal a goal against Preston or Rotherham either.
The recent results against, Preston, Rotherham, Bristol, Plymouth and Stoke strongly indicate otherwise.
Not really, the failing against these teams is our own creativity, failure to create chances, failure to hit the target, we dominate the ball against these kinds of teams, we lack the players with the drive and ability to get through them. We typically have near 60-70% possession, upwards of 15-20 shots against these kinds of teams, and very few of them on target, so it's obvious where the failing is, and not an indication that we should be seeking to defend from the off and try to soak up pressure.

I think that proves the exact opposite. You’re right, we play open and can control the ball but we create nothing. That means that when we fail to score the open style means we inevitably concede. I think what you’ve just written is an excellent justification for the change.

The only possible explanation I can think of is that he's wanting to have a good look at them before making a decision as to whether we want to sign them permanently, but we can't afford to do that right now, we're in danger of being dragged into a relegation battle.

If Carrick is the the right man for the job it is mystifying that he can't see what almost all the fans are witnessing with his first choice full backs. Ayling is now a liability and Thomas is unfathomably poor. To keep on selecting them despite recent evidence is tantamount to a plea to be sacked. Wednesday might just push it over the brink.

You can play 3 at the back and still play attacking football.
So the issues are going to be the same then aren't they. Different formation, same instructions, same players making the same mistakes. Is changing the formation going to suddenly stop Dan Barlaser making costly mistakes every game or make our players suddenly hit the target?

Sounds like we are the Liverpool of the championship as far as injuries are concerned.
The only two teams in the top 2 divisions that get any

I didn't say play out from the back and tap it around
