I like ENGEL

I like him too, I have a feeling that a fully fit Bangura will be our first choice LB but Engel is a good option there as well. I do sometimes wonder if Engel can be used as a utility player! He does struggle at times against direct pace but I think he'd do a good job as a CB or maybe even as a CM. He's got some good attributes, he's a good athlete, good in the air, puts in good tackles and blocks and works very hard!

I like him too, very shakey start to say the least but he’s been our best LB this season. He’s improved and hopefully that trajectory will remain.

I’m still a little nervous with him as he seems to lose his markers especially when he starts to tank around the 60 minute mark. I’m sure the physio’s will work on his stamina in the offseason but I just get the feeling that Bangura will be ahead of him due in part to his ability to track back better.

Engel is a mixed bag for me, he does some good stuff mixed in some very poor play at times. (I think he is decent going forward, but struggles defensively.

But he has got this year under his belt so let’s see how he goes next season…I would give Bangura a run of games and have a good look at him, he could be the answer.

Why wasn't he included on Saturday?

I'm still not convinced about him, especially defensively and he's not a kid, so I'm not sure how much improvement you can expect from him.

The fact that Thomas has played so many minutes suggests to me he's a player we'll look to add in the summer and if we do I can see Engel moving on.

I have done the engel argument to death. Statistically he is very good.

He was guilty of playing blind passes at the back earlier in the season but seems to have cut that out.

Any lb we play with the current team will be exposed over and over because they are left isolated. It isn't the player it's the way we play and the left sided midfielder who, currently doesn't track back in the same way Jones or forsse does.

It isn't a priority I wouldn't have thought and bangura may well be the long term answer.

I said it in a previous thread. Engel had an awful first 2-3 games and ever since then he's been painted with the "not good enough" brush that fans aren't willing to change.

The problem he has, is he's constantly isolated and being forced to defend one on one situations, which any defender would struggle with.

I'd want Jones or Forss to beat a full-back at least 50% of the time - and you'd expect most championship clubs will want their wingers to do the same. Engel has always been the target.

Our LW players are all used to playing forward/attacking positions - Greenwood used to be a striker, and our left sided CDM are both forward thinking players... Hackney and O'Brien.

Ayling is able to look much better than Engel because he has the freedom and support from covering players - Jones used to be a RWB and Howson is an experienced defensive CM.

I’ve got a soft spot for Engel. It was really impressive how he came back from his awful start with us and I think he’s really grown. I like those quick balls he plays into the channels, a different type of attacking fullback but effective just the same. I think he and Bangura will push each other next season to get even better.

He has improved dramatically but he still makes me nervous and sometimes looks nervous. Really hope we don't sign Thomas though, has been very uninspiring.
