Hypothetical - Would you sell Chuba ....

... if it guaranteed Archer was signed permanently?

Tough one this, but it would be a yes from me, age and massive potential on the Archers side.

However, sentiment makes the decision harder, as I loved the 'Akpom comes good' story that played out last season, and him proving to us all that he is such a talent.

Ideal world they play together again next season - but not on this thread! Time to choose ....

I’d stick with Akpom. His 29 goals were invaluable to us. I like Archer as a striker, but there are other players that could go the same job. Chuba is a massive part of the way we play, it would be very difficult to find someone similar.

In a heartbeat.

I don’t want Chuba to go, but if it was the only way to sign Archer on a permanent basis, yes please.

Keep Chuba everytime surprised anyone would be happy for him to leave after last season, irreplaceable

Both great at this level. I think Chuba’s role would be harder to replace in our team though. Maybe Forss would get 15-20 goals if he played up top?
Another successful season for Chuba (15goals +) and we’d be well on our way.

Nah, we should be (and I hope are) doing everything to keep hold of Chuba.

As has been said, it's not just Chuba's goals that are key, it's the way he plays, bringing other players into the game and starting attacks.

If this was Championship Manager i'd be setting his status to "Indispensable to the club"

The scenarios with Akpom are:
1. Signs a new contract and stays
2. Sell him now
3. Doesn't sign a contract and stays

Obviously 1 is the option we all want. I just really hope we don't end up with 3 because any player with his eye on the door won't be performing at 100%. You see it all the time. Players in the last year of their contract don't want to risk being injured and they don't have to worry about what division they'll be playing in next season because they are leaving anyway.

Based on the fact Chuba is 28 and only had one good season in his career and Archer is 21 and impressed everywhere he's been and seemingly improving exponentially, I think Archer is the better choice.

His mobility and pace up front was as imprtant as Chuba's play in the second half of the season. I would guess that their goals/min ratio over the season wouldn't be too dissimilar either.

I do worry that Chuba will struggle to recapture the form he has shown this season especially as he is certain to receive additional attention from opponents. He did drop off in the last few weeks of the season.

Definite no from me, Chuba brought something different to our team last season. Not just goals but the ability to drop deep and muscle his way past midfielders and create spaces. I loved Archer but without Chuba he wouldn't be half the player up top on his own. Its been 30+ years since we had a 20+ a season goalscorer and I'd even be willing to take the risk of him running his contract down for one last season.

No, Archer was great but Chuba's link up play and composure was so important to us and he's be absolutely critical to us challenging. Players come and go, so Archer's age isn't that important, he could leave after a couple of years anyway, or end up leaving out of contract or whatever.

I can only give you 1 point if you don't show your working out.

Blimey, that takes me back. I cant, i used the calculator under the desk Miss!!

Anyway, the negative side of me worries that Chuba may not repeat what we saw last year - he had shown nothing prior for example. Also, his role/position is now a very common/popular position and i do think we could find another, not the goals but like i say i do not see him hitting those heights again.

Archer was class and will continue to get better and better with age and experience.

That's not always true.

Viduka was outstanding in his last season with us prompting accusations he was only playing so well to put himself in the shop window.

Akpom comes across as nothing but completely professional. If it's option 3 I don't see him doing anything other than giving 100%. He loves playing in this team, loves playing for Carrick and loves scoring goals.

Even from a selfish perspective though he'd be giving a 100% to get himself the best possible move/contract. He needs to prove he's not a one season wonder and his age is a factor. If he has a bad season he might not get any prem offers. It's a different situation to someone who has more of a proven track record and/or is younger.

While I agree with you regarding effort and performances, it would be a business disaster for us to run his contract down now after the season he has had.

We've got a player worth 10-15mil that could walk away for nowt in 12 months time. We either need to get a contract signed or cash in.
