Humbling defeat

The game was over by half time, so we slackened off, which was the right thing to do and not risk getting crocked for a game and competition which would certainly have ultimately had zero reward.

They only had 10 shots on goal, twice what we had, it's not the end of the world, they were just very clinical, but clinical costs mega bucks.

They were very good, especially in possession, but they're a top 8 side, it would take us 8 years at best to get where they are, and it's possibly even impossible for us with our location and local owner who is a billion miles from the wealth of top 10 prem sides.

They're above Chelsea, Villa, Palace, Leicester, Leeds, West Ham, Everton and Southampton, and the lad wearing their number 10 shirt just won the world cup, and was one of the best players in the tournament, don't worry about it.

They will be targeting a cup win, as it's by far their best chance of silverware or entry into Europe, they were not taking this lightly.

Back to the league we go, will be in the playoffs at the end of the year and I'll be glad we went out of the cups early, to help enable that.

you take up a better position, get closer , dont stand off , close down spaces off the ball, track your man, niggley fouls , put them off their game, disrupt their rythmn.
Dont just stand off and run around half arsed.

You're making the assumption that Brighton didn't also show fight and effort. They did and combined with far greater skill and pace they showed the levels above us they are. We looked slow and ponderous because of that and there is no shame in admitting that.

They have no other commitments, comfortable in the league and can very realistically win the trophy.

We just got unlucky with the draw, but at least now we have no distractions and can use the FA Cup weekends to rest.

been a few home games like this against much better teams/players... 2 against Chelsea and one against Arsenal a few years ago. Its gonna happen when they have much much better playrs because they are in the premiership. Only way to beat them is to upset the rhythm by aggressive play and i dont think we could do that ....

How do you know it wouldnt have ended differently. In cup competitions lesser skilled teams outfight their more skillfull oponents. Its happened to us numerous times as well .

Because Brighton never dropped their game, cup shocks happen when the better teams drop their game or a team gets incredibly lucky.

Us at our very very best in every department doesn't beat Brighton playing like they did today without a huge helping of luck.

They are simply better than us and no imaginary additional fight and effort changes that.

Great Post and a well balanced view.

Not really overly upset by it.
It's exactly what you'd expect when a Premier League side plays to their ability.

Brighton fielded a strong team, only 3 outfield changes and they brought on the rest in the second half.
We had chances still, just a bit of a struggle at the back.

They're a very good side right now, they've demolished better teams than us.

We tried to play our usual game of possession based football playing out from the back. You can't do that to such superior opposition. It's like a non league team going to anfield and trying to out football Liverpool. Utterly stupid. There's no shame in direct combative football in cup ties

I'm not saying go all Crazy Gang Wimbledon on them .. I'm talking about the way you approach the game .. Get the ball forward quickly, get the ball in the box, don't let them settle on the ball .. we just sat back and said "go on then" .. and then they did .. and then when we got the ball we tried to do what they were doing to us .. and we could barely get out our own half in the second 45 ..

You're asking us to play in a totally different way and beat a far better team playing at the height of their ability.

We couldn't get close to them for a very good reason.

Watford lost also.
Think our upcoming fixture against them will now go ahead despite it being FA Cup 4th Rd (I think?)
Good - they are our of form and are currently ravaged by injuries.
The only poitive of today?

Do you genuinely believe us lumping it forward would have changed anything?

I have absolutely no doubt that the only difference is that you'd be complaining about us doing that instead.

We were beaten by a far better team, outclassed in every department, that is the simple reality.

Can agree with some of that but not the “game was over at halftime so we slackened off”

Much more a case of Brighton just stepping it up ( Mac Allister coming on) and us not being able to get a kick.

If we had changed the team and the result had been the same we would have had a lot of posters saying “we weren’t at full strength “ etc etc.

Well we were (just about) and they weren’t and gave us a thrashing.

Shows you how good a manager Chris Wilder really is, beating united away and Spurs at home in the same Cup last season against much bigger clubs and better squads than Brighton.
This is some take given his embarrassing carry on this season. Priorities I say. Bournemouth were knocked out by Boreham Wood at home last year, I bet they didn’t give a toss when they went up.

It's highly unlikely we would have won but adjusting our playing style would have given us far more chance you can't sit back and match up man for man with superior teams. Look at the way Morocco got further than some far more technical teams in the WC because they fought for thier lives and had a pragmatic game plan. We were way to soft and open in our setup today
