Humbling defeat

Players gave up in my eyes. Hull played fulham , a similar standard to brighton and didnt concede 5 at home. I bet sheff weds dont concede 5 vs newcastle.
Fulham are nowhere near Brighton's standard. Brighton are an established Premier League side with quality players including one of the best players at the World Cup. Fulham are a yo-yo side. Higher than our standard, but nowhere near Brighton.

We could have knackered ourselves asreholeing that game today and lost it 0-1 we kept it steady and we played the game to win. 2-1, 3,-1, 4-1 we were still playing to win the game as much as folks have said Brighton didn’t get out of 1st gear, they still had do fight and throw in the dark arts, we kept calm and assured. I was not surprised that we lost today and perhaps a little cynical part of me kind of hoped we would have, straighten ourselves up, a reminder not to get too complainant and to fully concentrate on getting results in the league. The dream is not over, Brighton pulling out the big guns killed us off, there wasn’t THAT much between us.. but how do you compete with pulling a world cup winner off the bench?

Good to see my old gym crush Jason Steele put on another confident assured display just as he did in Brightons 3-1 victory over premier league leaders Arsenal.. what a guy!

My views on Jon Paul Van Hecke remain the same, 22yo out of contract in the summer and very much looking the part for me.. pretty sure he will have caught Carrick’s eye.. no doubt he would have featured in Nobby’s Notebook had he not been otherwise engaged with the wyndsors world of shoes xmas party.

Cameron Archer got a few minutes under his belt, the Dan Barlaser deal seems to be moving in the right direction with whispers of a £600k fee being agreed.
Elanga would be a nice option on the wing. Still have concerns over our defense, Dijksteel, Lenihan & Clarke being injured at the moment. Proved to be the downfall of our best manager in recent years.. maybe a quick patch up can be done and maybe save some of the work that needs to be done in the summer?

Not sure where the idea we didn't try is coming from.

We were outclassed, but we had a big chance to make it 3-2 almost immediately before they scored the 4th, and had a number of other chances on top of that.

They're just a much better side than us who played to their potential.

I’m sure Carrick will use the defeat to raise the bar with certain players. The defending for many of their goals was hapless, which tells you what we need in terms of players if we are going to improve. Paddy showed why he’s not in the reckoning for a first team spot, while Smith doesn’t have the legs. However, Brighton showed why they are a top 10 premier league team.

I thought the substitutions today were terrible,
2nd half would have gone 442 , brought Bola on and pushed Giles onto wing . Likewise Jones on other flank , why were Howson and Chuba playing 90 minutes risking booking or injury.

We were outnumbered in midfield and that allowed them to play little triangles for the entire game
And a billionaire owner...
I have no problems with provincial clubs like Brighton having rich benefactors to make their teams competitave

Every club in the history of football has won things by spending more than the other teams, thats just reality

Championship side says to premier league side 8th in the premier league as they bring on a World Cup winner from the bench.. “ ok guys.. enough is enough.. we’re going to play 442 now, you probably haven’t heard of it! Oh, and we’re going to put on one of our 2nd string left backs..”

I agree, just seems like a billionaire owner is a prerequisite to get established in the prem these days.

You setup with same tactics and formation for Wigan at home and keep it for Brighton then your going to get a tonking. We needed a better gameplan we were soft and tactically naive today. At least we can concentrate on the league

As I said on another thread, Brighton were possibly one of the worst teams we could draw in this round. I've just been watching the Sheff Wed v Mags game and bar Joelinton and Sean Longstaff the vast majority of the Newcastle first team that started against Arsenal are watching from the stands or on the bench. Brighton fielded pretty much a full strength side.

Brighton are not in Europe, they are out of the League cup, unlikely to win the PL or even qualify for Europe, they are probably already safe from relegation. They can throw their full resources into the cup. A bit of luck and they are good enough to win it. They have given good account of themselves against top 6 PL sides. FFS they were able to bring on one of the stars of the Argentine World Cup winning side in the second half!

Manchester United were in absolute disarray last season. And Spurs were not doing much better. Both slacked it off against us and we had lucky breaks, in both games (United failed to put away numerous chances and Kane had a very tight offside call go against him). Brighton are in great form and put the effort in to beat us.

There's no shame in that defeat, despite the scoreline. It's not a big deal as long as it doesn't affect our league form.
Not got a problem with today's defeat, but I wouldn't attempt to disminish our results against United and Spurs either.

Spurs is fair enough, but we were exceedingly lucky to beat Man United.

They dominated us throughout, missed a penalty, missed an open net, and we scored with one of our only shots on target with a goal that would have been disallowed 9 times out of 10 in previous seasons, even without VAR, then won the shootout without the keeper making a save.

A great example of a lower league team getting lucky and winning a match they probably didn't deserve to.

We were the better team against Spurs though.

I loved both victories and this isn't diminishing the results. To win a game against a Premier League side, especially one near the top end of the table, you need a stroke of luck. You can't mastermind a victory when there's that much difference in quality.
