It’s not hard to understand. in the summer we lost £42 million worth of a scoring forward line. We also lost the guy who created most of our chances for said forward line. We didn’t own 3 of those 4 players concerned. The one we did own we made circa £12 million on a structured repayment basis based on the demands of an astute Ajax club. We did not bank £12 million. We done well last year because we scored more than the opposition. The whole success was predicated on attack - accepting we simply didn’t defend well. This summer we lost that ability to score but retained the ability to concede. Not surprisingly we are continuing to concede but no longer out scoring the opposition. Recruitment this year is very poor - particularly from the loan market - you have to assume Gibson looked to balance the books on salaries for loans that limited the recruitment team considerably. I think we will survive this season but unless we find an investor with a genuine desire for success we are are looking at a future as a bang average championship club. In short despite Carrick’s bizarre selection decisions, I think our problems lay way above Carrick’s level. UTB
