OK. A very fulsome description from Erimus74. With a few photos. My reckless gamble on nostalgia did not pay off.
"Only one No10 for me & the only Riverside player I would chose from any player at Ayresome Park, I remember watching saturday morning football focus & during the show they announced we’d just signed Juninho & to the guests, ‘whats your thoughts on this’, it seemed everyone was buzzing with our new signing, the excitement in the Boro when we signed him, the bitterness in the London media, shame on them, it was exciting times, Robbo brought something to our football club we’d never seen in our history
Juninho brought something to our football club something that I never thought I would see in my time, a player the whole country talked about, fans from other clubs would happily pay to watch & he played for the Boro
Robbo signed Juninho in 1995 from Sao Paulo at the age of just 22 for £4,5M, the Brazilian footballer of the year had signed for the Boro because, 'Bryan Robson got on a plane & went to see him’
His debut, at home to Leeds on the 4th November 1995, was a carnival, bouncing atmosphere, bands playing the samba, fans with their faces painted, in his 1st season he showed glimpses of what was to come but his 2nd season at the club, 1996-97, wow, he was mesmerising at times, he was instrumental in getting us to 2 cup finals, his perfomances, his goals, link up plays, fast feet work, runs, he was an awesome talent, games that stand out Wimbledon at home when he ran nearly the full length of the pitch with opposing players trying to pull his shirt off his back, Newcastle at home in the league cup, his finger wagging at Albert, his performances v Huddersfield when scoring the 1st in a 3-1 win, Sheffield Wednesday at home winning 4-2, the match after us losing the 3 points farce, he seemed to actually take the 3 point issue personally, the goal that knocked Man City out of the FAC at Maine road then running the full length of the pitch to the Boro fans, his goal at Derby in the FAC SF, his mesmerising performance at Leicester when we beat them 3-1, looking back all the games you didn't want him to perform to that standard, his goal & his performance at Old Trafford in the 3-3 draw, the list was endless, then that distraught figure at full time on the pitch at Elland road when the inevitable sunk in & we were relegated due to the Blackburn game, yes he had his quiet days, but when he was up for it what a player, he single handildy tried to keep us in the PL
Juninho came runner up to Chelseas Gianfranco Zola for the FWA Player of the Year award, IMHO fixed
His amazing 1st spell he played 57 games, scoring 12 goals
His 2nd spell, 1999-2000, he was loaned from Athletico Madrid, playing 28 games, scoring 4 goals
On holiday in Cyprus in 2002 I read in the papers that McClaren was hoping to bring Juninho back to the Riverside, I was absolutely buzzing, as were thousands of Boro fans all over the world & he did, Boro paying £6M for the transfer, within 2 seasons he had achieved his goal of winning silverware for the Boro
He scored the only goal at Highbury when we took a 1-0 lead from the league cup SF 1st leg, the 2nd leg seen us finish off the job & book our 4th cup final appearance & Juninho's 3rd for the Boro
His 3rd spell seen him play 35 games, scoring 11 goals, 1997 sat on the pitch at Elland road he had tears in his eyes, 2004 he had tears of joy
For a number of weeks Emerson was probably the best player in the world but unlike Emerson, but TLF showed time & time again, over the course of his time here, whether in sunshine, rain & snow storms he was here to stay & give his all no matter what conditions, heart, passion ran throughout the best player to ever play at the Riverside & the best we’ll ever see
In December 2007 he was voted by Boro fans in a PFA fan's poll as Boro's greatest ever player. Juninho, to this day, is still seen as a hero on Teesside by many Middlesbrough fans
My son was born in 1997, 2 cup finals, relegation & deducted 3 points yet his favourite Boro shirt is his 1997 shirt with Juninho on the back
One last time, ola, ola, ola, ola Juninhiooo
Special mentions to the following
Alan Foggon was Stan Andersons 2nd signing when we paid Cardiff £10k, he was to become big Jacks secret weapon with his turn of speed, running from deep & his good finishing
Alan signed for the Boro in October 1972, played 136 games, scoring 49 goals, finishing top scorer in both 73-74 & 74-75 seasons, during our summer tour of 1976 Tommy Docherty signed Alan for Man United for £27k, where he played 3 games before being sold to Sunderland, joining the rare club of playing for all 3 top north east clubs, including Hartlepool
Stan Cummins who played 44 games, scoring 9 goals between 1976 & 1979, his 1st goal was on his debut at home to Hearts in a midseason friendly when we beat Hearts 3-0, scoring his 1st Boro away league goal at Villa on his 3rd Boro game, with his 1st home goal coinciding with Graeme Souness’s final Boro game. I was coming home from work & seen the gazette billboard headlines, ‘Boro star sold to Sunderland’, I was devastated
Micky Burns, a £72k signing from Cardiff when John Neal brought him to the Boro, he scored on his debut away to Man Utd on the 7th October 1978 in a 3-2 defeat, he played 61 games, with an incredible 24 goals in his time here, an excellent signing, upon finishing his football career at the Boro he agreed to join the coaching staff"
Here are the results from round 10. This time I have sorted the second sort field of name alphabetically in reverse for a change. I guess we may have to have a tie-break or something else to separate the people at the top at the end of the quiz. If there is not a clear winner. I will think about that later today.
As you can see, round 11 is favourite right back or right wing back. With a big hint from Erimus74 in the top of his write-up.
As usual, answers by 12:00 noon tomorrow please.
