Have we given up as a club

All this "big club" stuff is just nonsense. Any club with a bigger revenue than Boro is bigger than Boro, and Boro is bigger than any team with lower revenue. History in football means nothing any more. The lower leagues are full of teams who have won leagues and FA Cups and League Cups but those wins from decades ago don't help one jot with paying the bills any more.
True.

West Auckland once won the world cup. They now flounce around in the northern league.

Remember how everyone scoffed at us signing Watmore? That turned out pretty well so I’ll trust the judgement of Warnock, Blackwell and Jepson. One thing is for sure is that those 3 will be identifying potential signings and not others within the club.

The underlying sentiment here seems to be around our recruitment. I've been critical of it for a long time, particularly our inability to address the creativity issues we've had since Gaston left. Add in the uncanny ability we seem to have to scout wasters or players who turn into a shadow of their former selves once they don the shirt then it's no wonder we've struggled.
Until we address this ongoing failing then we'll continue to plod along in the Championship.
We saw with Woodgate how easy it is for an unbalanced, uninspiring squad to expose an inexperienced manager and flirt with relegation. We've also seen that with Pulis and Warnock, for all their nous and organising ability, we don't have enough quality to push on and properly challenge.
We've got the facilities to push on, it's about time we started populating it with some talent and that includes our academy.
If we have to make some important acquisitions to the team then we need to prioritise acquisitions on the recruitment team. Plenty of teams seem very capable of spotting attacking talent on the cheap so there are people out there that we could employ to do the same for us.

Agree 100%
Brentford are a good example of spotting young talent and producing competent professionals(y)

Akpom? Bettinelli? All his other signings?

Watmore is the only good one for me and we probably only had him in as he lived up the road.
