Harry Maguire said he feared for his life when Greek police arrested him.

Did anyone did see his interview tonight, just as I thought they would Man U legal team spinning it so that he is the victim.

He was found guilty btw. so not sure what he’s basing this on and he won’t apologise either.

even the news added we have to stress that this is his side of the story.

I prefer to wait for the truth before casting an opinion on him. He is allowed a say, if it BS then condemn but I don’t see anything wrong with him defending himself via interview if he feels he has been done over, I know I would
He had been found guilty so it’s not an assumption he’s been tried yes he’s appealing but as it stands he’s been convicted.

Found guilty yes but by the sounds of it they rushed the trial and didn’t even listen for witness opinions. Like I say I get him defending himself, I believe him. He could be lying of course but I personally believe his side of the story

He assaulted a policeman Not once either as the verdict showed.

He was found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult after arrest on Mykonos

It seems he is denying it but as I say why should His version be any more plausible than theirs.

Fair. Interesting to see how the re trial goes. Whenever that may be
As I say it seems he is denying that so I’ve deducted my initial post.

I just don’t trust Man U lawyers remember fergie speeding charge excuse.

Don’t the police have body cams in Greece? Is there no CCTV? No phone coverage! Would have thought something would have been shown on the internet from such a popular place by now!

He was arrested, tried and sentenced in a little over 48 hours - that seems rather like a 'rush to judgement' to me, with no time for proper legal procedures, evidence gathering, witness interviews etc.

I saw the interview and there were no lawyers involved, it was just Maguire one on one with a reporter and it certainly didn't sound like he was coached.

As he describes it they were forcibly taken to a police station (when they had asked to be taken to a hospital because his little sister had apparently been drugged) where they were assaulted by unidentified men who later turned out to be undercover policemen. He says all he tried to do was run away and totally denies having tried to bribe the police.

I have to say that for whatever reason, I found his account plausible and I don't see where the police provided any corroborating evidence other than their statements, so it seems the court case came down to their word against his, with the judge siding with the police.

Incidentally, according to the BBC under Greek law, having appealed, Maguire's conviction is automatically quashed so he is no longer considered to have been guilty of an offence, until his appeal is heard.

Standard defence for a Brit, especially a celebrity being arrested abroad. "I didn't know what was happening, I was scared, I was just protecting my family, I was being kidnapped, the coppers are all bent, we were targeted blah blah".

Sow seeds of Johnny foreigner law enforcement not being as even handed and above board as a good old British bobby, till it all goes away.

Exactly this. I also found what he said plausible and he seemed to be on the verge of tears. He doesn't really strike me as the acting type. It's clearly been a very traumatic experience.

I wouldn't be surprised if the truth was somewhere inbetween to be honest. If they thought his 20 year old sister had been drugged then in the heat of the moment they may well have been behaving more aggressively than he remembers. Also wouldn't be surprised if he did try to bribe them. In the heat of the moment, with a few drinks inside you, you're not going to have perfect recall.

I can also believe the police were heavy handed, in plain clothes and came across as pretty dodgy. Your mini bus gets pulled over in the middle of the night and a load of strangers try and man handle you off it, I think panicking a bit is understandable.

It's quite possible that both sides genuinely believe their side of the story is correct.

Some people , Zorro included must have led very sheltered lives to believe that law enforcement services are whiter than white.
You only have to look to the USA for the answer to that.

"From their statement I am pretty sure they said I hurt a policeman's back and arm. I had the hand in the air, handcuffed, when I tried running away, I didn't realise they were police at the time and thought I was getting kidnapped. I don't think I hurt him. Put it this way: I didn't hurt him as much as they hurt me."

So he's hit a copper then.

He conviction is now quashed until the retrial because of Greek law, i think we will know if Maguire was telling the truth if he bothers to turn up to the trial, he could end up in jail
