Harry Maguire said he feared for his life when Greek police arrested him.

He conviction is now quashed until the retrial because of Greek law, i think we will know if Maguire was telling the truth if he bothers to turn up to the trial, he could end up in jail

I did find it interesting he didn’t turn up to the first trial.
If that was a scrote from Middlesbrough who hadn’t turned up i suspect he/she would not have got such a sympathetic hearing pleading their innocence from afar.

He was arrested, tried and sentenced in a little over 48 hours - that seems rather like a 'rush to judgement' to me, with no time for proper legal procedures, evidence gathering, witness interviews etc.

I saw the interview and there were no lawyers involved, it was just Maguire one on one with a reporter and it certainly didn't sound like he was coached.

As he describes it they were forcibly taken to a police station (when they had asked to be taken to a hospital because his little sister had apparently been drugged) where they were assaulted by unidentified men who later turned out to be undercover policemen. He says all he tried to do was run away and totally denies having tried to bribe the police.

I have to say that for whatever reason, I found his account plausible and I don't see where the police provided any corroborating evidence other than their statements, so it seems the court case came down to their word against his, with the judge siding with the police.

Incidentally, according to the BBC under Greek law, having appealed, Maguire's conviction is automatically quashed so he is no longer considered to have been guilty of an offence, until his appeal is heard.
I watched the interview too and I thought he was plausible. If you put yourself in his shoes and consider how you would have reacted to your sister being drugged and you are then bundled by a group of men in plain clothes who assault you and claim to be police officers, I think most people would not respond in a calm and collected manner. No excuses for him here but he is a very wealthy man, recognised across the world and as such a prime target for organised crime groups.

The bribery allegation could be something as simple as him saying 'I am a wealthy man, let us go and I will give you money'; this wouldn't be attempted bribery unless he was at that stage fully aware they were police officers in that he was in a police station. Also I suppose he could argue he was offering to pay a fine in place of being arrested. Either way it does seem that the whole process has been rushed through and the appeal process is certainly warranted to test the integrity of the conviction.

Why would eight police officers follow the van - I was in Mykonos last year and never saw one police officer. They obviously knew who he was and were targeting him.

Agree with the comments about being charged , heard and convicted in 48 hrs.

I hope he clears his name.

The only thing he seems guilty of is believing he can mix with normal people without being targeted- sadly he will need security on future holidays.

But was his sister “drugged” by “Albanians”? No mention of hospital check up etc in any reports I’ve seen. He’s just behaved like an over privileged idiot and now whingeing about being “kidnapped”. Ridiculous beyond belief!
Presumably all this evidence could be gathered if they had time. Not sure how you can mount a defence in 48 hours when there's x number of witnesses and potentially toxicology results needed.

The interview looked pretty genuine to me. If he didn't know they were police officers then it has to be seen from that perspective. Running away from a policeman or trying to bribe him is one thing, but if you don't know the person is a policeman and you think you're being kidnapped then it becomes more understandable.

Bit strange it took him (&/or) his advisors almost a week to come up with this tosh. If he was even a half decent person he should be apologising to his family, club & Gareth Southgate for the embarrassment he has caused, but no, it’s all about him. Pathetic

Who knows, and who cares? He was arrested and convicted, he is appealing. I guess it will get some coverage in the news at the time of the retrial. For the minute, why do we care? He was on his holidays, got drunk and out of hand and was arrested. All seems very believable to me.

Asked how badly he was hurt, Maguire said: "They hit me a lot on the legs. It wasn't on my mind. I was in that much of a panic. Fear. Scared for my life." Where are the bruises, they seem to have conveniently disappeared.

I agree, it seems the quote ‘ do you know who I am ‘ has been worthwhile, a few lads from Boro....anywhere for that matter wouldn’t have seen the light of day for 6 months.

i thought his crocodile tears and fear of kidnap was a joke this morning on TV. He should have just kept quiet and left the spiel to his lawyers.
He is as guilty as sin in my book.

The one thing that did surprise me is that if he did offer a cash bribe to the Police Officers that they refused it.
Bearing in mind Greece is a basket case economy based on cash in hand and a pitiful legitimate tax revenue.

Yeah - cos all Greek police officers take bribes. FFS - this is the defence trotted out by tons of people.
English footballers are a paragon of virtue too. ;)

This 👍🏻

btw I’m not saying he’s innocent or guilty I’m saying I don’t believe his version is 100% true.
Most of these things are basically just negotiations. The police will be found to have done a few things wrong and the officers in question will get some kind of warnings, Maguire will end up apologising for his part in it and will 'reflect upon his behaviour' etc. He'll probably end up getting his sentence overturned and a bit of a fine instead but says he'll learn from it, then everyone goes home a bit embarrassed with themselves.

Not true, the BBC have simply quoted what Man Utd - the well-known experts on Greek law - have said and the MSM have swallowed it all

Not simply drugged but 'Injected' with a drug according to Maguire

Some people , Zorro included must have led very sheltered lives to believe that law enforcement services are whiter than white.
You only have to look to the USA for the answer to that.

Some people must also be very gullible to believe every hard luck story when someone is found guilty. The date rape drug excuse is the same Arthur Collins used.
Simple truth is we don't know. In England they would have CCTV and bodycams. There would be evidence collected from mobile phones that would not be possible in the timeframe they tried this case. They may not have that in Greece because they're skint.
