Harry Maguire said he feared for his life when Greek police arrested him.

It's the 'shake down' nature and indecent haste from incident to trial that makes me think there's more to it.

The fact it was plain clothes police officers, the way that Maguire could have paid a fine and the whole thing would have been dropped.

I rarely believe the celebrity in these things but something about this doesn't seem right. Where's the cctv and mobile footage?

Indecent haste?
The timing was determined by Maguire’s legal team according to the prosecutor. That appears to be a matter of fact too. .

Ah right, last I heard on BBC breakfast earlier in the week was that Maguire's legal team requested an extension, guess that must have been wrong.

Not really followed it and couldn't care less but that was just my inexpert opinion.

I’m putting my trust in no one.
A trial has happened and he has been convicted.
I’ll respect that decision

He will now appeal and I’ll respect the decision of the appeal

That’s all I can do really because I wasn’t there so have to rely on a justice system.

One thing I won’t do is take the word of a guy I’ve never met who had a week to prepare a scripted interview - unless and until his account of events have been proven to be accurate in a court of law.[

/Yes because there has never been a miscarriage of justice in a court of law has there?

Maybe the Greek prosecutor need to employ a top end PR team to aggressively spin the story in their favour?
Or just report a few facts. Truth of the matter is we will probably never know the truth so we can go back and forth on this all day. You have your view I have mine.

of course there has
but - none of us were there so whatever the outcome we either accept it or use an extreme example of a miscarriage of justice (either way) to claim injustice.
why anyone who wasn’t there would do that defies logic

It is like you are sat in a pub and there has been a fracas outside which you didn’t see.

A bloke you have never met (who was involved) comes in, sits next to you, gives you his account of the story and says - you do believe me don’t you.
And you say ‘yes’

I’m totally bemused as to how you can’t see that everything you are saying can apply equally to all parties involved and not just the accused.

Miscarriages of justice do happen, but they are statistically quite rare. Maguire isn’t the accused any more, he is the convicted. So while you are correct to point out similar arguments can be applied to all parties, I’d take issue with the word ‘equally’. On the balance of probabilities, from the outside, Maguire seems guilty to me.

He's not the convicted under Greek law.

According to the Guardian article and the Greek prosecutor he is.
The Greek prosecutor is showing himself up - he’s the same guy who can’t explain what happened but insists Harry Maguire is in the wrong.

No need to be bemused - we are agreeing.
All parties could be lying or embellishing.

Police in all countries have been known to stitch people up - it's hardly something that's confined to foreign police forces. I'm not sure that they always need to have a particularly overwhelming reason for it, either. I think it's sometimes just a desire not to be perceived as having done something wrong.

Let's just imagine for a moment that Maguire is telling the truth and that a group of undercover policemen decided they were going to arrest him and had not in fact identified themselves before trying to do so. After a fracas had ensued and they needed to both justify their actions and save face, what kind of story do you think they would tell?

I think it would end up being a version of events remarkably similar to the one we are hearing.

Of course I can't guarantee that's what happened here - but I don't think we can dismiss it out of hand either.

The prosecution insists Harry is chatting out of his ****.. Seems just as 'plausible' as our Harry's sob story with racist undertones from his friends 'we thought they were Albanian because they had an Albanian nature'.
How long before they seek compensation , this lawyer is already representing two of the police officers. Must be hard as nails Harry to take on all eight of them!!!

So, when you said both could be telling lies you really only believe the Englishman

‘Blighty wants it’s counter back’ :)
