Hackney

A low bar, but such an improvement on Mowatt.

I thought he did well.

I sit near the tunnel and I think Mowatt had the sh*ts the amount of times he was running down the tunnel during the game.

Although in fairness he showed more mobilty and dynamism sprinting down the tunnel tonight than in all his performances on the pitch this season. Perhaps there's a player in there if we get him on a plate of Phaal curry for his pre match meal.

Send him back

20 yr old and no worse than Chong or Hanibal. Certainly deserves to be involved until January. He should feel pleased with his performance tonight and hopefully it gives him the confidence to kick on. If he does then he saves the club some money in January. I suppose its hard at that age to be a really pro active midfielder, but if he can progress rapidly then he should have a good career

Hayden Hackney definitely!

Thought he did well and played with confidence. Loved that moment during the 1st half when he was being pressed in our half and evaded his man with a nice drop of the shoulder.

I liked that he was willing to shoot from distance as well and play forward passes to feet. Encouraging performance.

I thought Hackney did well tonight. Worked hard, always looked to try and play forward (a welcome change). He was a bit rusty and caught in possession / out muscled a few times but given he hasn’t been near the first team he coped really well and changed the dynamic of the team for me. A refreshing change from the stale slow predictable midfield of recent times. A strong 7 out of 10

Does anyone think there was something more to Hackney getting a start tonight?

A young lad to come straight into the starting 11, who hasn’t even been on the bench, in the first game since the manager who was known to not really trust in youth was sacked, seems like there was a message there.

Or maybe I’m reading too much into it. He played well, great to see him turning his man and chasing back to win the ball. Correct to sub him when we did as perhaps we needed a bit more experience to see the game out.

Every club needs to be creative with the players they have to pick from it’s not all about buying players . Perhaps the manager was too stubborn to blood some of the young lads and take a bit of a risk perhaps .

Wilder said our academy players weren’t up to scratch. He wanted rid of Dael Fry.. he sold Nathan Wood for £400k and yes academy players on the fringe of the team last season.. now deemed not to be worthy of game time!
No mistake that Tinkler, Liddle and Cattermole formed part of the management team.. he was essentially saying that they were all useless too!! Leo’s speech was spot on.. why these staff are here, why these players have been chosen etc.
