Hackney

To be fair there couldn't be much less zip, some fresh legs and drive couldn't hurt.

*watch him give away goal in the first minute and get a straight red now I've said that.......

Should have been tried weeks ago, someone with Zero football ability but with a hell of an engine to harass and break up play would make us far more effective.

I'm not saying Hackney has zero ability by the way, I've not seen enough of him to judge.

Smallwood plays at what level?
Smallwood has had a very good career. I think he’s had three promotions, captained four clubs, and made around 400 senior appearances. If Hackney achieves something like that he’ll have done very well and will be another plus for our youth set-up.

What I meant by mentioning Smallwood is that someone like Hackney might pop up and do a job for a while. We do need some energy in midfield, like we did when Mowbray took over and had to choose between Arca and one other. Even Aitor used Smallwood for a while.

Hackney might be more talented on the ball than Smallwood if reports are accurate, but if he starts tonight he’s got a great opportunity to start a long senior career.

Hackney was the man driving the u 21s v Newcastle. Has definitely a good engine and will cover the ground making up for the deficiencies of some of the slower players.

He has ability but it tends to be conventional. The spark to play the killer ball is probably missing.

Sadly it will take a long time to get rid of the stigma of the "spitting incident" He will be targeted to try and provoke it

Good luck to the lad. Hope he takes his chance with both hands because there's definitely a spot available in the team.

Good about time the Academy was used again, as others have said can't be any worse, he's made a big mistake but needs another chance to prove himself.
C'mon Boro, C'mon Leo and C'mon Hayden, good luck to you all.

I wonder if some of Wilder's signings, i.e. Mowatt, might have kicked up a fuss, hence why we're trying something different.

Someone replied to me on another thread about us switching to 4 at the back, saying why would we and the remit is to just keep us ticking over. I think thats disrespectful to Leo and the team who've been given charge the next game or two. They will have their own ideas and preferences, and if they think we need something different in CM, then they've seen more than Wilder did all season.

There was talk of some of the academy lads being given a chance tonight though, Hackney and Gibson were two mentioned. It would be great if one or two of them could step up and make it difficult for them to be dropped from the first team.

I'm not sure on the situation surrounding the spitting incident so don't want to pass too much judgement, but it's one of the lowest things any human can do to another for me and I don't really like the idea of a player who does that being associated with us.

Putting that issue aside, it's a massive opportunity for him if he does start, and the youth coaches (and Leo, obviously!) must see something in him to put him in. Agree with all of the other points that we basically don't have much to lose by trying him, as our midfield has been shocking.
