Graham Thorpe has died

A classy batter at a time when England were pretty awful.

55 is very young to go, RIP.

Shocked and saddened by this.

I'm sure I'll be corrected if wrong, but was he not the batsman who saw us to victory in the dark in Pakistan?

They were delaying, trying to claim a draw, but England refused to take the bad light and won in the end
I think he was too, with Nasser if I recall correctly. It was also on that tour he became the first English batter to score a century without a single boundary.

He was also at the crease when Flintoff came of age as a test match batter against NZ. I remember listening to it bed and the ball was flying everywhere with Thorpe getting 200 and Freddie a big hundred too. Then NZ came out and I think it was Nathan Astle and Chris Cairns who nearly chased it down.

Fantastic player, class and grit at the same time during the 90s when we were lacking in both around the rest of the team. I also remember him being on the wrong end of a Courtney Walsh beemer which was of course accidental to a well set batter!

I remember when he was held up qualifying to play for England, but it was certainly worth the wait.

RIP Graham Thorpe.

My favourite player. Remember him scoring a hundred on his debut against the Aussies like it was yesterday. Not much older than me, no age at all.

Mental health is such an awful disease. It can affect anyone at anytime. Please people....if you're struggling talk to someone, anyone.....friends, family, your GP, Samaritans. You are worth it....you are loved. Please don't let this awful illness take you away from the ones who love you

This is so sad to read. I feared it may have been a case of him taking his own life when I read and heard some comments from ex teammates, Mark Butcher in particular, who talked about hoping he found the next place easier.

God bless you GP Thorpe, this is why we need to continue as a society to increase our understanding of mental ill health and develop interventions that can make a real and timely difference.

I remember Thorpy as a batsman when I was really getting into my cricket. I thought he was brilliant.
I had a feeling that mental health had played a dark role in his passing. Really saddened to read conformation of that this morning. Good on his family for coming out with the news with the explicit narrative that this is a really horrendous illness and needs tacking.

As Legz says, there IS help out there. Please seek it.

I may phrase this badly so don’t shoot me down

But hasn’t there always been a disproportionate number of cricketers who struggle with mental heath and end up taking their own lives?
