Grade our season thus far

We have the same number of points that we had at the same stage last season - however we have no Akpom and an injury ravaged squad, so depending on how you want to view things from here we are in a weaker position, on paper at least. If we can stay in touch with top six till the window an get one or two new players in plus most of the injured back then who knows

We have the same number of points, but we're lower in the table and further off the play-off places and much, much further off the automatic places, with a worse squad.

The aim at the start of the season was automatic promotion, and we're 22 points off 2nd and 12 points off 4th.

Injuries haven't helped, but we started badly even without the injuries, and we have more than enough fit players, they're just mostly new signings deemed not good enough by fans, which should surely be impacting the ratings given.

After 22 games:

2023/24 - 30 points (one of our worst starts in history, then a bounce back)
2022/23 - 30 points (Carrick brought in after 11 games because of Wilder's bad start, finished 4th)
2021/22 - 30 points (Wilder brought in after 17 games because of Warnock's bad start, finished 7th)
2020/21 - 36 points (no fans, finished 10th).
2019/20 - 21 points (our worst 2nd division season since the 80s, finished 17th).
2018/19 - 36 points (finished 7th)
2017/18 - 32 points (Monk sacked in the next match because he was a pr*ck and it was an underwhelming return, Pulis finished 5th).
2015/16 - 46 points (automatic promotion season, finished 2nd).
2014/15 - 39 points (play-off final season, finished 4th).
2013/14 - 26 points (Mowbray replaced by Karanka after 12 games because of a bad start, finished 12th).

Our average tally in the Championship at this point over the last 10 seasons is 32-33 points, so we're having a below average season right now.

That's not true. We were 12th in the table after 22 games exactly where we are now, 3 points behind Watford in 6th who had a game in hand on us.
If we have a worse squad now, how come we have exactly the same points at this point as we did last year? Especially considering we didn't have nearly as many injuries last year as we have had this season.

It is true.

We're 13th right now, 12 points behind 3rd and 6 points behind 6th.

Last season after 22 games, we were 12th, 6 points behind 3rd and 4 points behind 6th.

We've got a better manager this time.
We started last season really badly too, with only 4 wins in the first 17 before Carrick took over.
We'd won 7 of the first 17 this season.

If we had last season's starting squad with Carrick in charge, I think we'd have won far more than we have with this current squad.

I'm also sure we'd have won more without injuries, but they've happened and, at least for me, mitigation doesn't make losing nearly half your games a B rating.

What we had at this point last season isn't really relevant. You can't extrapolate this season with last season's 2nd half results. Last season we had an unprecedented improvement mainly brought about by a change of manager as well as Akpom coming back from injury and massively improving and Hackney breaking into the team We're not going to have that this season. We're not just going to suddenly improve. We can definitely be better than we have been but we are not going to be one of the best teams in the league like we were last season. It's far more likely we continue as we have been with small runs of playing well and playing poorly.

We don't have a player that will get 28 goals and win games. That one player was worth so much to us last season and we have nobody even close to that level.

D maybe a c due to our cup run. Our three marque signings to replace Akpom archer and Ramsey are silvera rogers and latte latth. You are bound to go backwards. Players who couldn’t get a look in last season are now regulars pretty much every position from last season is weaker. We still play the same positive brand of football But just don’t have the same quality to carve real decent teams open. Our aim at the start of the season was top 2 and atleast be in the top 6 again. We are 13th. The season is still alive, there’s another window coming up, and we are still in touching distance. And have a bright young manager who that said does have a concerning lack of plan b.

I don’t care what anyone says but injuries have cost us dearly imo - had it not been for losing Smith McGree and Forss for so long it’s perfectly feasible we would have another 6-9 points in the bag now. Smith in particular has been a huge loss in defence as it’s been a shambles at times back there. Outside of the three clubs that came down i really don’t see anyone else that we should fear (including Ipswich) if we can get our best side out on the pitch, along with a couple of additions in January, we can still make top six i think.

Apologies for some reason I was sure we were 12th. We're still extremely close to where we were last season and by this time next week or so could be closer to the play offs than we were at Xmas last season and in a semi final of a cup.
I realise that no two seasons are alike and it is not a perfect comparison but it shows that the idea that this season is a right off already is very premature. This season could still end up a much better one than last season. We are not necessarily in a worse position than we were at this point last season.

We are further of from last season as we have three really strong teams rather than just one
Our squad is not worse at all..
don’t believe the hype!

Playoffs has to be a realistic aim.
Injuries haven't helped, but we started badly even without the injuries.
We didn’t have the players we needed in time
and we have more than enough fit players
Hmm.. we have enough
they're just mostly new signings deemed not good enough by fans.
those fans are clueless planks
After 22 games:

2023/24 - 30 points
2022/23 - 30 points
2021/22 - 30 points
2020/21 - 36 points W A R N O C K
2018/19 - 36 points (pulis)
2017/18 - 32 points (Monk + Pulis exactly the same
Pulis over appreciated, Warnock under appreciated.. we are 100% bang on track.. spookily so.

C+ Could do better, needs to pay more attention to defending. However I do believe with the right application we could finish off the term very strongly and perhaps achieve the elite class for next term.

C- mainly down to poor recruitment in the summer with a couple of exceptions. Squad was lightweight before the start and is wafer thin after injury glut. Hopefuy we can get some players back soo and get better quality in during thr Jan window. We need to strengthen upfront, in midfield and in defence.

Poor recruitment? Say whaaaaaaaat?

Good squad, half of its injured and we’ve still
Pulled in the same points as last season.

I'd go C because of the cup run, which will be cemented if we win tomorrow night. Injuries have obviously disrupted us and we don't have the same attacking quality as last season.
Unfortunately, I think there are only two play-off spots realistically available. I think Leicester, Ipswich, Leeds and Southampton will more likely than not finish in the top 6. The final two spots are between about 10 teams, including us, but we need to be pretty good from now onwards. Not sure we will do it, but at least the season is alive and kicking!

I largely agree with your sentiments newy. If we had a full squad some of the new lads would be bit part players as you would expect until they settled into the team patterns of play.

Our inconsistency it's largely down to the defence who can't keep a clean sheet. We score most games and often in multiples yet it's the forward line who are carrying the can.
