Giles going to applaud the Boro fans afterwards

Booing a player who was excellent and fully committed to us last season is idiotic. He was here on loan. He had a better opportunity in the summer. He took it. I can't see why anyone would have a problem with it. Even if he did say he would like to sign for Boro, so what? Another more attractive opportunity came up so he took it.

I don't blame players who are contracted to us wanting to leave us and go play in the Premier League. Never mind players who aren't contracted to us.

Should have been given a good reception, not a hostile one.

He's getting slated on Hull's match day thread, can't defend and doesn't get forward enough, I think they have an obligation to buy him in the summer for £4m.
I really rate him but he will never be effective as a standard full back. Does beg the question why Hull have wasted money on him if he doesn't fit their style of play.

I got the impression at the time that we wouldn’t pay him what he wanted and Luton stepped in to meet his demands?

He defended himself on twitter around the time that Akpom was leaving, with something cryptic agreeing with not believing everything that was being said about being greedy. Sounds just like the sort of thing that happens in football. Wage demands probably were deemed excessive for a left back who struggled defensively but has a great left foot.

Losing Giles isn’t why we’ve struggled to reach last season’s heights. Akpom on the other hand……Indeed his replacement Engel’s actually scored for us too, something Giles never looked like doing

I wonder if Carrick would consider having him back after he sh it on us. He's got what he deserved in terms of being bombed out by Luton and maybe we could get him for a couple of million and get him back to the player he was.
Not sure how much was him and how much was the club. But he did seem to drop all images of him playing for us off his socials pretty quick, even before signign for Luton. Once it became apparent.

Any our three best players last year have had a torrid 12 months.
- Giles went from assist king and improving defender, to premier league liability and bombed out on loan again.
- Archer from championship cheat code, to confidence bereft premier league reserve again.
- Akpom from championship best player to perennial sub at a crisis club in a second rate league, again.

Maybe we should get the old band back together, it might be more affordable now.

The lad jumped at the chance to play in the Premiership.
His departure didnt affect our other signings, we werent just relying on him to sign up with us. Does anyone seriously believe Carrick and his staff are that naieve?
Good luck to him.
He was great to have as part of the side for that season, but right now I`d sooner have Ayling and a fit Clarkie.
I'm not sure that was the either/or scenario.

I don't think Giles choosing Luton was instrumental in us signing Ayling five months later. Or in us keeping Clarkie and helping him to regain his fitness.
Though it did result in us buying Engel and then Bangura.

I’d take him back and use him further up with another full back behind who can interchange comfortably. There’s a very good chance he’d improve here again. Lath looks like the sort of striker who would thrive with Giles’s service and we know jones scares defenders on the other side. We’ve missed having an effective threat from both wings this season.

Like the glory of days of Joe Bennett and Andrew Taylor
Andy Taylor was a decent player, along with McMahon, Davis, Downing, Parnaby, and many other youngsters.
If we want to look at "spanners" we could go back to the days of Colin Ross, Charlie Bell and Billy Woof.

And furthermore to be totally fair to your spanners - they were filling gaps left by quite exceptional players like Souness, Hickton etc and all playing in the top flight of English football.

I remember Luton releasing a video taking the p*ss out of us after they signed him.
I’ve not seen that. Would be interesting.

Giles cost us playoffs in my opinion. Form collapsed at end of season and bad pass gifted Coventry the attack they scored from. Always has a bad error in him. It’s whether it gets punished. Got suckered into the tackle on Jones last night that resulted in the overload. I would look elsewhere.

Found it.....

Did you watch him run 70 yards when he set up our equaliser you negative crank?
So I have to don my rose coloured specs or tell lies about what I have seen to fit your agenda. Or be branded a crank. No problem with his run and pass for the goal but is his job. He has so much talent it's untrue but does not take a man on enough is crossing and shooting is often very wayward. Sometime guilty of just playing the short get rid pass when there are other options available. I'm not calling for his head or anything I was just saying I thought he had a poor game. IMO.

We started the season without a proper left-back and had to play Coulson for the first three games. That certainly indicates that we'd been let down after assurances had been given.

We should definitely, definitely hold that against Giles, the cad.

Applauding our fans in person in no way makes up footage of him being used in a video by a Luton fan.
Not what I was saying.
This thread just reminded me of Luton taking the p*ss because we all thought he was definitely coming here, until he stopped following the club on Instagram or whatever.

It was a bit like the dig our social media had at Celtic over McGree, 'prefers red to green' or something.

I don't remember it like that. I think most of us always thought he'd take the PL option.

Glancing through this, I also see no reference to anyone referring to a promise to sign for us back in the Summer: willing to stand corrected on that if anyone is prepared to plough through 11 pages of the thread, but this current thread was the first I've heard of that.

Hence why he's playing for a top half Championship club and not in the PL. If we want perfect players then we'll have to spend far more than we've got, or he cost.

Don't blame him for taking the prem move, but do wonder (and did at the time) what on earth Luton were thinking. Did they just look at his assists stats and nothing else?

He was very good for us playing in a system where we had lots of the ball, were on the front foot more often than not and deliberately set up to allow him to effectively play almost as a winger when in possession.

He was still defensively suspect, but he didn't have much defending to do.

To buy him expecting him to be able to defend at Premier league level was idiotic. I'd say they didn't do their homework, but then Edwards had worked with him before 🤷. Just an odd signing for them.

I wouldn't want to go anywhere near him, particularly given the size of the contract he's probably on. I'd have serious doubts about him replicating his form for us. Would be a pricey gamble.
