Gigs you’ve heard…

Inspired by a comment on the Libertines / Redcar thread… Have you ever heard a gig without having attended?

When I lived in Poznań, Poland, I stayed in a flat very close to the Cytadela Park. Radiohead were booked to headline an outdoor show there (2009??) but I’ve never been a fan at all. So me and my flatmate sat in the kitchen in the evening listening to the gig with a few cans, thinking “why didn’t we just get tickets anyway?”.

Anybody else had the luxury of listening to a concert without actually attending?

*for the record, I’m pretty glad I saved my cash - I find them extremely dull

Melbourne Grand Prix, listened to 4 days of it in St Kilda 2005. Didn't matter where you were you could hear it.

I also heard a Beyonce gig at Old Trafford.

I once heard a Whitesnake concert at Redcar Bowl having been locked out all night at a sell out show - my friends and me were eventually allowed in as the final encore was finishing.

By the way great new edition of the fanzine PBT. Much recommended. Please do plug where it is available on here.

I listened to an Elton John concert in the bath, when he played at Darlington Arena a few hundred yards from my house.
Pinball Wizard was my favourite song.

I was in a hotel in Sydney directly over the road from the arena The Cure were playing. Could hear it all pretty well. Should've actually gone to the gig though, not sure why I didn't thinking back 🤔

A friend of a friend lives in a house that backs onto Old Trafford cricket ground. Every gig that's there, they can hear it perfectly, and I believe get a bit of cash for the "inconvenience". Great place to park for a gig as well!

Rod Stewart drifted in on the wind into my garden, playing at York Racecourse in 2019. I just looked that up wondering if it was this summer or last. FFS.

I used to suffer a lot with migraines that would cause me to lose most of my vision for an hour or so, before the real headache part began to kick in. I'd be going about my day as normal, then I'd suddenly realise parts of my vision had disappeared and I'd know the migraine was on its way.

On two different occasions I've been at gigs (on my own) when the vision thing suddenly started just as the band came onstage. On both occasions I found a quiet space to sit down and listen to the gig with my eyes closed, as that was all I could really do. Couldn't leave the venue or try to go home, as I couldn't see much. Then my vision cleared at the end of the set and I rushed home to get to bed before the headache started.

So I suppose I attended those two gigs, but didn't actually see them.

Not a gig as such but I did stand outside the Liquid Rooms in Edinburgh listening to The Psychedelic Furs soundcheck.

I listened to Jean Michel Varre (sp) in Platt Fields when he played Maine Road. The music wasn't all that but the light show was fantastic.

I remember hearing Ella Fitzgerald from Linthorpe Rd when she played Ayresome Park.
When New Order played The Piece Hall in Halifax, they were so loud that I could hear them from Bristol .... Mrs 259 stood out in our garde (3 miles from the venue) and I could hear it clearly down the phone.
I heard Embrace soundchecking All You Good People last summer from the door of Marks and Spencer (near the Piece Hall). That was plenty for me.

Sat in the garden at Appleby Terrace and listened to David Bowie play at Roker Park.

It wasn't as good as seeing him at Murrayfield on his Let's Dance tour.

Muse playing Arles Amphitheatre. In my European tour guiding days I took a load of Americans to sit outside with baguettes et fromage and it was a great evening.
