Gazette Player Ratings

But those two central defenders have 320 Championship appearances under their belts. One of them wears the armband. They’ve had Howson in front this season, 600 games and the armband, and Barlaser, another senior pro, and still been all over the show. O’Brien was there last night and he’s got 150 Championship games on his record. But we’ve got a 20 year-old trying to take all the responsibility. Even last night it’s van den Berg being aggressive in the second half, for the whole half not just 20mins after half time. Where are Fry, Lenihan, O’Brien, Crooks?
agreed, bit harsh on O'Brien who did ok and is still learnign the system and his teammates, but Lenihan and Fry need to step up big time

Thought Lenihan was pretty good second half. He kept trying to push us up the field. Hackney as well, tried to get us moving forwards. O'brien expected more, but maybe he hasn't got the fitness yet to drive forward. Lots to improve on. Coburn did his best but needs help at the top of the pitch.

My take:

Seny Dieng - 6

Usual steady away self, Did everything expected of him, let down on the goal by defenders ball watching and leaving an opposition player in clear space

Rav van den Berg - 6

Played out of position, did the basics ok, coped well enough at Left Back in the circumstances, will learn from the experience, but CB will clearly be where we see him at his best.

Dael Fry - 5

Looked slow and one paced at times, guilty of ball watching too and am beginning to think he is not the player he was prior to injuries post 2021/22 season.

Darragh Lenihan - 6.5 (.5 added for the goal)

What you see is what you get, steady performance at the back and in playing it out of defence, earned Boro a point with a never say die attitude at the corner, VAR might have thought otherwise.

Lukas Engel - 3

Pol Valentin had the beating of him every time down the wing, and with minimal effort. Lacked pace from a standing start, anticipates movement poorly when defending, always showed when in possession, made some positive runs but teammates clearly lack faith as was only given ball as last resort

Hayden Hackney - 6

Like his midfield compatriots, he was sloppy in possession during the first half, several stray passes as possession was tamely handed to the opposition. However, 2nd half he responded well, drove Boro forward and was really positive in all he did

Lewis O'Brien - 6

Keen to impress but was sloppy in possession in the 1st half in particular like all the midfield, bags of energy and grew into the game

Sammy Silvera - 3

Wasteful in possession, lost ball far too often resulting in serveral attacks breaking down, his shooting is as accurate as a Michael Fish weather forecast, although was a little unlucky not to score 1st half

Riley McGree - 6

Struggled to get into the game first half as Boro struggled in possession, appeared to lack trust in Engel as had opportunities to play him in behind but often turned back inside looking for better options. He was caught a few times dwelling on the ball, losing possession, but was much improved after the first 30 minutes, he looked out of sorts though.

Matt Crooks - 4

Chasing his own shadow first half as he lethargically tried to press occasionally, but improved a little after the break as Boro pushed forward more. He is a central midfielder playing out of his comfort zone as a 10.

Josh Coburn - 6

God loves a trier, had a lonely first half battling for the ball up top, often isolated, never gave up working hard to break up play too. Had one quality effort second half that but for a slight deflection looked goalbound.

Isaiah Jones
(For Engel, 46') - 7 - Changed the game for Boro after his introduction at half-time. Played more as a right wing-back, often more advanced and caused Sheffield problems throughout, which helped up the Boro’s tempo as a result, 45 mins on the pitch and was SkySports man of the match, says it all really, well done Izzy.

Sam Greenwood (For McGree, 68') - 5 - Largely anonymous as both teams were tiring and lacking quality thereafter.

Seny Dieng - 5

Little he could do with the goal, and little else to do beyond that, but he did what he needed to without fuss.

Rav van den Berg - 4

Struggled first half to help Boro move the ball out quicker, but actually improved in the second half when switched to the left. Still only average for me

Dael Fry - 4
Very poor game - exposed for pace and made to look bang average by very ordinary players. One trick - pass / sideways pass pony.

Darragh Lenihan - 5

A key part of a very average defence. Needed to stand up and lead a lot more. Best of a poor back 4

Lukas Engel - 4

Had a shocker but completely let down by the system, fellow players and management. No cover on left and no adjustment made when he was clearly struggling and exposed for pace. Playing very tight midfield leaves full backs in all sorts of trouble.

Hayden Hackney - 6

Tried way too hard to play killer passes first half and gave ball away countless times. Better second half

Lewis O'Brien - 6

Not clear what his role was and like Gackneh wasteful at times. Needs to understand the system - as do we all!.

Sammy Silvera - 5

Had more touches than most - apart from the crabs at the back. Little support and ended up in blind alleys. Should have been eithdraan way earlier.

Riley McGree - 6

Looks lost / disillusioned at the moment, like a bloke who wasn’t invited to the tactical team talk. Tries hard but bit of a lost soul.

Matt Crooks - 4

Lols around like a big lump of wood. Has an incredible ability to look absolutely shattered after 3 minutes. No idea what he adds? Based on the sweat on his brow he tries hard.

Josh Coburn - 6

Anonymous first 20 but at least looks for the ball and can hold it up - hallelujah! Put a shift in fif 90 mins and crying out for a strike partner (Latte Kath).

Isaiah Jones (For Engel, 46') 6. Idiotic yellow after a minute on the field. Played simple football which when everything else is garbage is a Godsend.

Sam Greenwood (For McGree, 68') - 4. Poor passing, poor control, poor everything. Added nothing and that free kick - wow.

Morgan Rogers (For Silvera, 90') - N/A

I pretty much agree with what they've said but feel it is a little harsh to expect Coburn to track right to our byline to prevent a cross. I would like to see Coburn get a run of games and see what he is capable of. Silvera was poor last night and I feel he struggles with the frenetic pace of the Championship. There was one point he was put through with what I thought was a 60/40 ball in his favour and the keeper beat him to it. We should have scored from that move or at least had the keeper foul him.

Jones had a huge impact on the game and must be in the starting 11 for our next game. O'Brien will only improve the more he settles and will bring strength and experience to the team. I felt McGree was off the pace of the game all evening and seemed to be lacking in fitness. McGree showed glimpses throughout the game of what he can do and played a lovely ball through for Coburn in the first half that led to the Silvera chance. Prior to being taken off, he had lost the ball on three occasions in vital positions and seemed to be blowing out of his backside.

I still can't fathom how Silvera lasted so long.

Seny Dieng - 6

Little he could do with the goal, and little else to do beyond that, but he did what he needed to without fuss.

Rav van den Berg - 6

Struggled first half to help Boro move the ball out quicker, but actually improved in the second half when switched to the left.

Dael Fry - 6

Steady performance without standing out. Sheffield Wednesday didn't test Boro's defence all that much

Darragh Lenihan - 7

Leaders performance, providing a level of calm at the back and in playing it out of defence before coming up with the moment that at least earned Boro a point.

Lukas Engel - 4

Carrick hooked him at half-time in a show of mercy. Pol Valentin had the beating of him every time down the flank, and with minimal effort. An awful performance.

Hayden Hackney - 7

Usual service largely resumed for Hackney after being sloppy in possession at the weekend. He drove Boro forward and was at the heart of so much that Boro did well in the second half.

Lewis O'Brien - 6

Added much more balance to Boro's midfield, but was at times a little sloppy in possession.

Sammy Silvera - 4

Wasted Boro's only decent chance of a dreadful first half and then in the second half was generally the player attacks broke down through as he struggled for an end product.

Riley McGree - 6

Struggled to get into the game first half as Boro struggled to work the ball out of their half. Brighter after the interval as Boro improved drastically before making way after 68 minutes.

Matt Crooks - 5

Anonymous in the first half, but improved along with Boro after the break to play his part in attacks as Boro pushed for a winner after their equaliser. He was guilty of some sloppy moments as Boro faded though.

Josh Coburn - 6

Guilty of not tracking the man well enough for the Sheffield Wednesday goal, though it's fair to question why your centre-forward is the man tracking a man to the byline anyway. Otherwise, battled so hard up top and despite at times lacking service and looking isolated, never once gave up. Fantastic individual second-half moment saw him come so close to firing a winner.

Isaiah Jones (For Engel, 46') - 7 - Changed the game for his side after his introduction at half-time. On at right-back, but playing so advanced and casuing so many problems, including winning the corner Boro scored from.

Sam Greenwood (For McGree, 68') - 5 - Failed to add any spark to Boro's attack as their positive momentum faded.

Morgan Rogers (For Silvera, 90') - N/A
Must have been at a different match. All those 6s and 7s. It was as bad as it gets against a shocking team.

I watched a different game. All those 6s and 7s

The thing that I don't understand with player ratings is 7 appears to be the average. Rather than five or six. Really you need to include zero otherwise there is no midpoint. It's very undtaisfavtory.

That word was meant to be unsatisfactory.
