Gazette Player Ratings

But if you score them on their own standards then Akpom for instance would only be scoring 6's for a bunch of last season because his standard was consistently high.
If Ndidi scores 8 every week that is fair enough surely? It would reflect that he is one of the best players.
Then if Engel does 'Ok' in his next game, does he get a 9 because it is so much better than his previous standard?

Ratings would be all over the place.

To be fair ratings are all over the place as its completely subjective.

I think we will probably always disagree on this one.

But for me going back to Hackney, and last night I dont htink he warranted a 7, as we know he can be better. If that was a 7 performance, then say for instance if he got an assist on Saturday that would be a 10? a goal 11?

It will take O'Brien a little time to get the midfield understanding with other players and he would be playing to orders no doubt, but I was expecting someone with more energy and drive. He just seemed to pick the ball up in front of the back 4 and pass 5 yards sideways - he looked to be playing at walking pace

He has been asked to play in a couple of different positions so far in his defence with a changing side around. I think he will come good (y)

I think the CB's are probaby struggling due to the instability around them, they must have one eye on the full backs, and runners seem to get through the midfield at will at the moment.
Look at the great teams, with the great defences.

The Arsenal Dixon-Bould-Adams-Winterburn for example.

Each player knew exactly what the other three are up to. When to go/stay/cover, whatever they did they all knew what their team mate was doing.......so they played with a natural fluency.

Also playing a 4-4-2 there was protection to all positions.

Boro, Fry and Lenihan don't know who will be RB / LB from one game to the next. They get little CM protection (although O'Brien did a better job last night) and because of how we play the fullbacks don't get much protection from the RM and LM. So off the ball, all over the shop.

So I agree, I do have sympathy with our CBs.

Not for me. We all know what a good performance at this level is, and what isn't, we've seen enough of this god awful league in recent years.

I know what you are saying, but I think I will always judge them individually, rightly or wrongly, on their own capabilities regardless of the dross around them 😂

Bang on

For me a 7 needs to have had a positive impact on the game above his average standard.

I dont think he did last night, he had better spells in the second half, but still not the level of intensity that we have seen from him in the past, and his passing still wasnt quite there even during his better spells.

I'd say a 6 personally, overall played to his 'average' but we know he can be so much better.

Engel, I think I'd rather not grade 😂
To be fair to Hackney he impacts the game through his passing, his average is 87.7 passes per 90 at 87.8%

Last night he was significantly above that in terms of number of passes and % complete. Considering first half he gave the ball away a lot despite us having less than 50% possession, so he must have missed maybe 2 passes out of 65 second half, that is some going by any standard.

To be fair, they were all top top class players playing in their preferred position, and played about 400 games together. We've got a 19 year old CB at FB, a Danish lad jumping up to a level he's never played before, a lad who can't get in a stunningly average Irish side, and an over-rated local lad. The 2 CBs should know each others game to some degree after playing about 25-30 games together but play like they are strangers.

But those two central defenders have 320 Championship appearances under their belts. One of them wears the armband. They’ve had Howson in front this season, 600 games and the armband, and Barlaser, another senior pro, and still been all over the show. O’Brien was there last night and he’s got 150 Championship games on his record. But we’ve got a 20 year-old trying to take all the responsibility. Even last night it’s van den Berg being aggressive in the second half, for the whole half not just 20mins after half time. Where are Fry, Lenihan, O’Brien, Crooks?

I agree a settled team is just much more beneficial to everyone, but for me some of these seniors get away with quite a lot of stuff that others do not. Some of our seniors did it to Woodgate, they did it to Warnock, they did it to Wilder, they’re doing it to Carrick.

They go missing. When Carrick is gone by the end of October, the next bloke will suddenly be getting a tune out of them. Fry, Howson, Crooks will knock a few in, McNair will be back. Lenihan will be stepping out.

They’re not doing it now but you can guarantee they’ll do it for the next manager.

Dieng - 6 (Decent enough, couldn’t do much about their goal)

RVB - 6 (Actually looked better at left back)

Fry - 6 (Steady away)

Lenihan - 7 (probably the best game I’ve seen him have for us)

Engel - 2 (The worst performance from a full back I’ve seen at the boro)

McGree - 6 (Didn’t do anything to justify that he should be starting, it did ruin us as he was subbed just as he looked like he was getting into gear)

Hackney - 6 (Showed a few flashes of brilliance and he was at least trying to make things happen. Would have had an assist if Silvera wasn’t a massive coward)

O’Brien - 6 (Huffed and puffed with little impact really)

Silvera - 1 (Beyond dreadful. Nothing he tried worked. Overshot passes, couldn’t beat a man without getting bullied off the ball. **** himself in front of goal. Don’t think I’ll see a worse individual performance this season.

Crooks - 4 (Looked like he was running through treacle. Worked well enough with Jones second half but most of the game was completely anonymous)

Coburn - 7 (Second half he was a menace, held the ball up well and was a whisker away)

Jones - 7 (Changed the game, was a consistent threat and everything good we did came down his side)

Greenwood - 5 (Not sure what he brings, but his introduction killed us)
