Gazette Player Ratings

I pretty much agree with what they've said but feel it is a little harsh to expect Coburn to track right to our byline to prevent a cross. I would like to see Coburn get a run of games and see what he is capable of. Silvera was poor last night and I feel he struggles with the frenetic pace of the Championship. There was one point he was put through with what I thought was a 60/40 ball in his favour and the keeper beat him to it. We should have scored from that move or at least had the keeper foul him.

Jones had a huge impact on the game and must be in the starting 11 for our next game. O'Brien will only improve the more he settles and will bring strength and experience to the team. I felt McGree was off the pace of the game all evening and seemed to be lacking in fitness. McGree showed glimpses throughout the game of what he can do and played a lovely ball through for Coburn in the first half that led to the Silvera chance. Prior to being taken off, he had lost the ball on three occasions in vital positions and seemed to be blowing out of his backside.

I still can't fathom how Silvera lasted so long.

Seny Dieng - 6

Little he could do with the goal, and little else to do beyond that, but he did what he needed to without fuss.

Rav van den Berg - 6

Struggled first half to help Boro move the ball out quicker, but actually improved in the second half when switched to the left.

Dael Fry - 6

Steady performance without standing out. Sheffield Wednesday didn't test Boro's defence all that much

Darragh Lenihan - 7

Leaders performance, providing a level of calm at the back and in playing it out of defence before coming up with the moment that at least earned Boro a point.

Lukas Engel - 4

Carrick hooked him at half-time in a show of mercy. Pol Valentin had the beating of him every time down the flank, and with minimal effort. An awful performance.

Hayden Hackney - 7

Usual service largely resumed for Hackney after being sloppy in possession at the weekend. He drove Boro forward and was at the heart of so much that Boro did well in the second half.

Lewis O'Brien - 6

Added much more balance to Boro's midfield, but was at times a little sloppy in possession.

Sammy Silvera - 4

Wasted Boro's only decent chance of a dreadful first half and then in the second half was generally the player attacks broke down through as he struggled for an end product.

Riley McGree - 6

Struggled to get into the game first half as Boro struggled to work the ball out of their half. Brighter after the interval as Boro improved drastically before making way after 68 minutes.

Matt Crooks - 5

Anonymous in the first half, but improved along with Boro after the break to play his part in attacks as Boro pushed for a winner after their equaliser. He was guilty of some sloppy moments as Boro faded though.

Josh Coburn - 6

Guilty of not tracking the man well enough for the Sheffield Wednesday goal, though it's fair to question why your centre-forward is the man tracking a man to the byline anyway. Otherwise, battled so hard up top and despite at times lacking service and looking isolated, never once gave up. Fantastic individual second-half moment saw him come so close to firing a winner.

Isaiah Jones
(For Engel, 46') - 7 - Changed the game for his side after his introduction at half-time. On at right-back, but playing so advanced and casuing so many problems, including winning the corner Boro scored from.

Sam Greenwood (For McGree, 68') - 5 - Failed to add any spark to Boro's attack as their positive momentum faded.

Morgan Rogers (For Silvera, 90') - N/A

Wouldn't agree with many of those ratings, except for Jones and Coburn.

I'd probably knock 2 of most of them.

If you can get a 4 for being hooked at half time with one of the worst displays we've seen at left back, you'd have to kill somebody to get lower.
Are the ratings similar to a non-league referee where you have to give them points for having the correct kit on and two flags?

Play Brighton style full back is important.
In attacking phase LB and RB need to play in support role behind attackers.
Engel isn't efficient enough, his anticipation is very low.
We get attacked on the left a lot.

If the problem at this position is resolved, then we can start getting point.

I always assume these are on the same basis as Match/Shoot when I was a kid (ie, 4 was the lowest you could get unless you did kill someone)

Someone was free at the top of the box to pick up Coburns man. Possibly McGree. He should have picked them up as they tracked in but seemed to stand and watch them go by.

(Not sure if they were marking someone else but it didnt look like it).

I dont think Hackney had a 7 game.

I thought he was poor first half, and was better second half, but a 7 would be going above what was expected of him and he certainly didnt do that.
I went 6.5 - 7 for him. I gave him a 5 for the first 30mins and an 8 for second as he dominated midfield in the second.

Engel I gave a 3, on reflection it should have been a 2

For me a 7 needs to have had a positive impact on the game above his average standard.

I dont think he did last night, he had better spells in the second half, but still not the level of intensity that we have seen from him in the past, and his passing still wasnt quite there even during his better spells.

I'd say a 6 personally, overall played to his 'average' but we know he can be so much better.

Engel, I think I'd rather not grade 😂

above his average standard, or above the average standard for this league. Seems harsh to expect him to play above his own level to get a 7, because if he does that 10 games running, then h has to up it again to get the same rating.

He played above the championship standard in the second half, first 30 he was poor, trying to play it through the eye of a needle, he did at least take responsibility for the ball and try something positive though, even if it failed every time first half.

Surely it has to be his own standard?

If its a league standard, there is such a gulf in level between players, that would mean if Wilfred Ndidi starts a game for Leicester and does the bear minimum he will be scored an 8+ because he is worlds apart in ability from Engel ( 👀 ) for instance?

Hackney was never a 7 and I’m not sure how Coburn is expected to track back for the goal, surely that responsibility lies with the defence and midfield

Hackney shouldn’t getting any stick IMO. He ALWAYS showed for the ball. That isn’t enough for a 7 out of 10 IMO but at least you know he’s playing. O’Brien had a fairly bright first 10mins and again after half time but was almost completely anonymous thereafter. He’s supposed to be the senior of the two but you’d never have guessed it last night.

Coburn was left isolated but when you get players close to him like we did in the first 20mins of the second half he looks a completely different player.

For me it’s Fry and Lenihan who warrant most criticism because they’re senior pros but they were so shaky for that first half. How can you expect new signings, young and unfamiliar with the team and their surroundings, to deliver performances when these two are lumbering about unable to do the most basic of defensive duties.

I felt quite sorry for Engel, he’s not ready yet. Same goes for Silvera. Crooks had a decent 20mins. Jones was very good for 20-25mins. That Van den Berg was our best defender - despite enduring a torrid first half - speaks volumes. Jones, Hackney, Coburn, maybe VDB, they’d be on a 6 at most.

The best player last night was the ‘keeper.

But if you score them on their own standards then Akpom for instance would only be scoring 6's for a bunch of last season because his standard was consistently high.
If Ndidi scores 8 every week that is fair enough surely? It would reflect that he is one of the best players.
Then if Engel does 'Ok' in his next game, does he get a 9 because it is so much better than his previous standard?

Ratings would be all over the place.

I'm by no means criticizing Hackney, I just don't think he had a particularly good game, or as good as the gazette rated him.

I think the CB's are probaby struggling due to the instability around them, they must have one eye on the full backs, and runners seem to get through the midfield at will at the moment.
