French Squad vs Englands squad

Pickford is in a team that almost got relegated last season, are 4th bottom this year and is regularly criticised for making major howlers. Lloris isn't the best but there isn't much between them. They are both a long way behind the best goalkeepers in the world.

Walker doesn't get a game for his club any more (our centre back who doesn't get a game at centre back for his own club plays there instead). He wasn't even England's 1st choice last week. France are a bit weak here because they've fallen out with their 1st choice right back Pavard.

Shaw has been nothing more than ordinary for his entire career at Utd and he's only 1st choice because we have nobody else. I don't see him as any better than Hernandez, who again isn't 1st choice but is there due to injuries.

Bellingham is 19 and has so far achieved nothing and England have had to change our formation so he doesn't get over-run by bringing Henderson in behind him. Excellent prospect and playing really well so not dismissing him but I think France's players are being dismissed. We're talking about what he might do next such as sign for Real Madrid but France already have Tchouaméni and Camavinga in their squad that have already done that. Rabiot is being dismissed as well but he's played 350 games for PSG and Juventus whereas Rice plays for West Ham, the 16th placed team in the PL.

Foden is a great player but he wasn't even England's 1st choice last week. His best position is wide left which is where Mbappe plays so that's why he misses out.

Kane is the only definite and even then it's only because France's 1st choice striker, Ballon d'Or winner Benzema, is injured.

Griezmann has been great so far. Not sure about player of the tournament. Mbappe has stepped up and delivered but Griezmann really makes France tick and his passing is great. He sees space and switches the ball really effectively. He's not just the goalscorer he used to be.
Walker was injured that is the reason he hasn’t started recently for city and also the reason he missed the first 2 England games. Keep up. Pickford is fantastic for England im not overly concerned about his form for Everton as I know what I’m getting when I see him in an England shirt. Never let us down and the undisputed no 1.

Luke Shaw is better than the lesser Hernandez.

Jude Bellingham walks into the France midfield and I can Guarantee you if Foden was French he would be starting ahead of Dembele. Griezmann has been good but let’s not overrate him, he was poor for Barca. He certainly doesn’t worry me any more than the likes of Dembele. Mbappe and Giroud are the biggest threats for differing reasons. I think Rice can do a job on Griezmann.

Centre backs I would go with France, Mbappe is a given and Touchameni I would maybe find a place for. Aside from that, give me Englands team.

Walker was pretty poor against Senegal, got rinsed on a few occasions and had to resort to fouls. Mbappe will destroy him if Southgate sticks with him. Might need to double up out there.

If anyone is leaving out Kane & Jude out of the combined 11, then football isn't for you.

The players who would definitely make a combined 11 regardless of formation are Mbappe, Jude & Kane.

Foden only just misses out because Mbappe plays LW, although I would definitely pigeon hole Foden as he's that good.

The rest of the positions (depending on formation etc) is up for a debate.

Yep you have to find a place for Foden, he gets in ahead of Dembele or Griezmann easily imo.

Who would you suggest we bring in? Walker is the only in the squad capable of of coping with Mbappe and even that is a massive ask. Alexander Arnold absolutely not as the lad is a poor defender and would get tortured and I think Mbappe would find Trippier easy to get past and I like Trippier

Lloris is defo the better keeper

Kane the better 9

You’d have mbappe and foden either side of him

Rabiot and Bellingham in the centre. Much of a muchness from there
I just don't think Lloris is commanding, weak at crosses though very agile & excellent shot stopper.. I'd have both Pickford & Ramsey ahead of him by a distance... & I'd go with Pope for pens cos he's a unit.

Mbappe is world class & the stand out player of both squads... I think ours has more depth & overall edges it on attacking skill, though I think they are more at ease in possession & move it better than we do..

You mean world cup and multiple champions league winning bottler Varane?

Upamecano is a pound shop Maguire? Well then Upamecano must be a penny shop lindelof and Martinez, as Maguire can't get in the man U team ahead of them.

We have a good chance of beating France but let's not get carried away after beating a few average sides
Behave France are there for the taking but people like you are beaten before it kicks off

He's still working towards regaining full match sharpness after a lengthy spell out. Hopefully getting 90 minutes under his belt the other night will have really helped.

The French team is a bit better than the England team and would probably win 3 out of 5 if the betfair market is to be believed and it's usually very accurate. It is a one off game though. Deschamps has more managerial experience than Southgate and his international management record is very close to Southgates, with a 63.9% win rate versus a 61.3% win rate respectively. This is despite Southgates apparent tactical naivety :D .

France will probably squeak a close game, all things being equal. It is a one off, knockout game. Southgate is up against an experienced international manager. Should England go on and win this can we please put to bed that Southgate is tactically inept please? Even if it is a very close game going to extra time Southgate will have matched a very good manager, who does have a better team, certainly in experience.

If England beat France, make no mistake it will have a massive impact on the young squad and may be enough to create the belief that they can go on and win this. It would be an exceptional performance from a young team.

We would likely face Spain or Portugal in the semi, then Netherlands, Argentina, or likely Brazil in the final. The semi looks doable with just a good performance, I don't think anything more is required there. Brazil in the final?.........................................

yup that's pretty much spot on, maybe harsh on Bellingham and Walker, but largely correct.

Did someone actually say that Griezmann wouldn't get in the England team haha HE's been a world class player for a decade, 42 international goals from midfield and not far off 300 career goals is superb for someone that doesn't play as a CF. On top of that he's also a brilliant player.

This aged well
If you'd still want Giroud over Kane, you're simple.

Kane [29yo] has scored 357 goals in 595 games - 53 in 80 for his country. He also has 63 assists in club football, 15 for England (total 78, from 595 games)
Giroud [36yo] has scored 319 in 774 games - 53 in 118 for his country. He has 75 assists in club football, 11 for France (total 86, from 774 games)

Kane scores more, assists more and has played far less games but whatever fits your agenda.

Anyone know if this is fact?
If so - it does beg a question or 2. View attachment 49217
It is a fact. It only says since 2002 because we beat the Argies in the group stage but you have to go back to the opening game of 1982 since we last beat one of the other big International teams at a World Cup (Brazil, Argentina, Germany, France, Italy, Spain, Netherlands). Since the 66 World Cup we haven't beaten any of them in a knockout. We don't play them that often, partially because we get knocked out before we get the chance to play the good teams.

The World cup record by match is available here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/England_at_the_FIFA_World_Cup#Qatar_2022

1970 Brazil (Groups), W Germany (Knockout) Lost both
1974 Did not Qualify
1978 Did not Qualify
1982 France (G) Won, W Germany & Spain (2nd Group) drew both
1986 Argies (K) Lost
1990 Netherlands (G) draw, W Germany (K) Lost, Italy (K) Lost
1994 Did not Qualify
1998 Argies (K) Lost
2002 Argies (G) Won
2006 N/A
2010 Germany (K) Lost
2014 N/A
2018 N/A
2022 France (K) Lost

Bukayo Saka 20yo
Phil Foden 22yo
Jude Bellingham 19yo
Mason Mount 23yo
Declan Rice 23yo

Check this lot out in the Euros and the next world cup!

Our very own Josh Coburn is still only 20, Newcastle's Elliot Anderson at 20yo looks promising, Sunderland's Chris Rigg is making waves at 15yo.. rumoured to be moving to Liverpool for £2.5m

Folarin Balogun is still only 21 Fikayo Tomori at 24yo will be somewhere in the mix

We have depth and I think are moving into an era of top three international sides. semi finals and finals until 2032 at least (Bellingham will be 29yo)
