Free transfer..... Lewis Wing

He's been in the champo team of the week a few times at Rotherham. Also won rave reviews from the fans. Despite the 'experts' on here he's done well with them.

No doubt he will leave and score 10 goals for a mid table champo side next year. It may as well be us 😂

Morrison and Cattermole were young players deemed not good enough for the Boro. Still had decent careers certainly for 8 years after leaving the Boro and often played a league above the Boro in those years.

Lewis Wing may not be as good as them, but he can do a job in a Championship squad as cover and rotation. I think we would be stupid to sell him for say a £1m and end up buying someone for £3m who would do a similar job on three times the salary.

Depends how you define journeyman? He's 26, got a handful of Football League appearances under his belt for a few different clubs after playing for a handful of non-league clubs. He wasn't late to football just late to professional football. He's pretty much the epitome of a journeyman. Not saying we shouldn't keep him as such, just didn't think your comment that we will only sign someone 'a little bit better' was so unappealing.
The epitome of a journeyman footballer is someone like Steve Claridge isn't it? He played for Fareham Town, Bournemouth, Weymouth, Crystal Palace, Aldershot Town, Cambridge, Luton, Cambridge(again), Birmingham, Leicester, Portsmouth, Wolves, Portsmouth(again), Millwall, Weymouth, Brighton, Brentford, Wycombe, Millwall(again), Gillingham, Bradford, Walsall, Bournemouth(again), Worthing, Harrow Borough, Weymouth(again), Gosport Borough and Sailsbury.

Lewis Wing spent time with numerous Northern League clubs as a teenager and established himself with Shildon at 19, before playing for Boro, Yeovil and Rotherham.

If Wing is on say £3k/week and we bring in a sort of George Friend on £16k/week is not a straight money replacement, if it the GF character offers a little more. I take the view that we could have Wing and a £13k player and add another player to the squad taht clearly tired at times last season.

Journeyman doesn't necessarily just mean someone who played for a lot of clubs. "A worker or sports player who is reliable but not outstanding."

I'm not saying Claridge doesn't fit that bill either but we could spend hours thinking up other examples too I'm sure.

That's pretty much my view....You can imagine the hysterics and cries of "why" (despite being written off) on here when he goes on to score a load for someone next season and likely rifles one in from 30 yards at the Riverside.

I think we might've been using different definitions of journeyman but it doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. I think Wing is worth keeping. I think it is the manager's job to find a place for a player who can score a goal or make a decisive pass out of nothing. Boro don't have much of that. Now Kebano and Bolasie have gone it is all down to Tav. We'd be mad to let another attack-minded player go IMO.

I'm not against Wing staying by any means. It is interesting how the board's view on him has changed in the few months he's been away. Back in January he wasn't wanted at all, it seemed.

Sometimes it can take that I suppose. You realise what he brings to the team. He's decent enough. As with Spence, there are lots of problems to sort out this summer - neither Spence or Wing should be anywhere near the top of the Warnock's list IMO.

I do get your point, but that doesn't really mean that much.
The Championship team of the week is done purely through stats and often includes players who haven't actually played that well and often aren't close to being the best player on the day from that particular team.

I'm not saying that's necessarily the case with Wing, but plenty of our players have got in the team of the week despite being poor.

There's also the fact that having a good game doesn't mean you're a good player.

Bettinelli was in the team of the week a few times this season, and he's been an absolutely shocking signing.

Akpom has been in the team of the week, he's been nearly as useless as Bettinelli.

Saville has been in multiple teams of the week this season, at one point he was in two consecutive teams of the week, and he gets slated non-stop on here, harshly so in my opinion.
Betennelli has had a few good games so I'm not surprised. Saville has as well. Were the occasions when even critics were saying they had good games?

The Rotherham fans have been consistently positive about Wing so there's nothing to suggest the statistics and fan approval are out of synch.

It all depends on what happens in the summer of course, but as things stand I'd say keep.

A hypothetical scenario, if Warnock continues with 3 CMs:

We could have Tav, Howson and Saville starting. Morsy and Wing on the bench. If we're hanging on and need to bring on someone to kick the opposition, use Morsy. If we're losing and creating nothing, use Wing.

Now any of those players might be replaced with better, and it may mean no more place for Wing. But while we need 5 CMs with a varied skillset and he's on such low wages, we may as well hang on to him.
