Free transfer..... Lewis Wing

It’s not my bar that matters
It’s NW’s
He will probably have Howson as midfield starter next season and to me that is a problem.
Re Wing
Would keep him but hopefully only as squad player

Well if NW is going to continually tell us just how good Howson and McNair are then he needs to raise his bar
Agree entirely Re Howson and McNair
My priority signing would be left sided center back to play alongside Fry something we have sadly lacked since Gibson went.
To me this leaves the team totally unbalanced.

Maybe, given that Wing has some great attributes, we should be looking at the coaching staff to improve the areas in which he is weak, that's their job.

To answer the question I would keep him.

I'd agree with laughing there and I've stated in the past that I think Wing is too easy to play around.
His positional sense really let's him down and that is definitely something that you can coach. I would add though that he's not the only one who could benefit from learning how to anticipate where the space will be both on attack and on the breakdown, he's just the one who gets exposed most often.

agreed particularly if we plan on playing a flat back 4, you just can't play McNair in a 4

I think it will take too long, he's 26 this month and he has the naivety and footballing intelligence of a 17 year old

Keep him, goal scoring midfielders are not exactly queuing up outside the North Stand looking for a start are they? Our midfield is full of adequate players who can hold position and pass safely five yards to the left or the right and every now and then twenty yards back to the keeper for him to hammer it aimlessly upfield.

Twenty yards back to the keeper. Surely that's an underestimation. Most of the pass backs were from the oppositions half!

Both he and saville have the same major positive to their game, they score goals from midfield. Apart from that the game invariably passes them by and they could both be professional hide and seek players.

We need better than these two if we want to go up, neither are good enough for where we should be wanting to go. Barry Bannan would be a massive improvement on both for a start for anyone wanting an example.

I think he could have an enjoyable career in the championship at the right club playing most weeks . He’s better off elsewhere, rather than talk about being a bench warmer at Boro when he’s retired . He almost contributed to Rotherham’s history in a big way , Hel help them get back up if he ends up there and probably get into double figures .

He is but only been a professional for 3 years.
yup, if he had gotten into a professional system at 16 like most pros, he would be much better. He's playing catch up. Take Tav, he's been receiving professional training for 7 years and is still learning at 22. IT would take another 3 years of training for Wing to have received the same amount of pro coaching as Tav has at 22. WIng would be 28 at that point.

I think top League One club is more his level. Sunderland maybe

Apart from having a good shot on him............ what are his strengths ?
I agree, he isn't mobile enough at this level. He can pick a pass but he's too slow to play a holding role and looks off the pace against the better sides. I am sure he could play in the Championship but not top 6 side which is what we aspire to be.

Ah you mean like Ian Wright for example.

The thing for Wing is he might score 5 screamers, but some other dude he's being compared to might score 2 in the box. That's a difference of three goals, which is great on paper but Wing might have less ability as a midfielder than almost every other first-team midfielder in our squad. This difference may ultimately might cost us 5 goals, as centre mid is extremely important. Also, how many shots does he miss/ give up possession?

He's the best striker of a ball we've had for years, no doubt about that, and if he was better at his no 1 job then he would be a cracking player.

One thing to consider though is long shots are a valuable asset against compact teams, who defend well, or who you can't break down as you get fewer opportunities in the box. So the goals he does score, could effectively be worth more, in some situations.

It'll be good to celebrate a trademark screamer in person again though, so hopefully he does well in pre-season and stakes a claim again.
