Formation against Germany

Obviously they have good players but so do we, I hope the emphasis isn’t entirely on nullifying Germany and worrying about their players to the point of preventing our players showing they can pose threats.

It’s knockout football now, you only progress by winning. This German team are nothing special at all. If we go out there with confidence, there’s no reason at all we can’t win.

looking at both teams, I don’t see us as the inferior set of players, so we should go out there and show that. Not show them TOO much respect as If we are the inferior team. We’re not. They were 15 minutes away from being dumped out tonight and didn’t even make it out of the group in the World Cup.

I don’t see the need to go too negative with formation and selection. They are very beatable side if you take the game to them

Germany were poor v France, Superb v Portugal, Grinding v Hungary. They are relentless generally. History tells you this is a game that is like Bosch v Currys. Occasionally Currys deliver a poor Bosch, but not that often.

I await, and hope i get pelters come next week, i am desperate for England to do well, but I would back Wales over England with my own money to be more likely to reach the next round.

They were knocked out the World Cup by South Korea, and have scarcely improved since then.
Let's not pretend they're world beaters.

Compared to us, sadly, they are. Results and history shows that. Why pretend otherwise? Lets hope history can even itself up, but Germany are the last I would have wanted.

Hold up man that doesn't make any sense, they've been poor for the last 5 years. Their recent results include losing to North Macedonia, getting gubbed 6 nowt by Spain and scraping a draw against Hungary.
And history isnt important, we're not playing their great teams from the past. it's like saying "I'm worried about playing Nottingham forest they've won the European cup twice."

nah Gareth won't change it for Germany game -- now if we're down by a couple of goals perhaps but this will be also a one goal thriller...maybe

Two countries with excellent footballers but without a decent team?

Having said that, the Germans played well against a decent Portugal side, putting four past them.

This for me is the wurst possible outcome. I wanted Portugal first, if not them, then Hungary, if not them, then France. Germany are slow grinders that eventually succeed more often than not. I pray we rise to the occasion and do them, but I currently have my ‘we have been here before’ head on
I'd much rather face Germany than France or Portugal.

Lets hope you are right and I am not 👍
We have to beat the best teams to be in with a chance. Think Germany are in a transitional phase (they brought Muller back for example, to help). If we got Portugal you know Ronaldo would be well up for it, loves that panto villain role. As for France, Pogba and Griezmann would rip our holding midfielders to shreds, plus the Kante effect of him genuinely been an all round beast.

It's a battle out wide which is crucial we need to push their wing backs back. Hummels is extremely slow to me he is their weak link I would keep the same team that started the last match with the pace of sterling and saka to get at their wing backs and try and get inside and isolate hummels. I would normally say against a German team to keep it cagey and don't overcommit forward but against this team I think we should go for it from the off.

It’s hard to properly judge the teams in that group.
France looked comfortable against Germany, Frances pace and Germany high defensive line caused all sorts of problems. France were then pretty unimpressive in the games against Hungary and Portugal. England have pace on the counter but probably not the defence to mimic this approach.
Germany then comfortably beat Portugal, who have a good squad but haven’t looked great. 3-0 against Hungary flattered them.

The only real conclusion I can make from it is Hungary are better than I assumed them to be.

Understandably given history, a lot of people wanted us to avoid this fixture but personally, it is the one I fancied particularly since it's at Wembley 😁 We've got as good a chance we're going to get to face them in a competition and beat them. They're definitely there for the taking IMO at the moment, we have an excellent squad capable of doing it.

We've been tedious to watch throughout the group stages but I hope this draw will liven things up a bit. Very much looking forward to this now.

Perhaps it will be another yawn-fest but see us through 1-0 :ROFLMAO: .. that'll do for me.

I'd be there all day if I had to decide the best formation and team for this, I'll just wait patiently until the day instead!

They're a great side but I'm confident we have a team that can win this one. Think of what it will do for the team in terms of confidence if we manage it, particularly if the likes of Kane get off the mark in this one too. Could be just what they need right now.

I didn't fancy France at this stage and certainly not Portugal. There's something about the latter which I can't explain but Ronaldo always seems to drag them through by the scruff of their necks and I feel they'd scrape it despite their frailties. Hopefully, they are knocked out in the next phase so we don't have to worry about them 🤡

I wonder if Sancho plays given his obvious knowledge of German players. So far England have played 4-3-3 and 4-2-3-1. Southgate could easily switch to a third formation with 3-4-3. Especially if Mount is not available.

It should be a great occasion and surely England can finally shake off their inferiority complex and beat a big team.

We really need to go for it, not worry too much about them and play to our strengths so definitely avoid the conservative approach. A repeat of the Euro 96 penalty shoot out would be too much to bear!

It's very easy to see Southgate not going for it, worrying about Germany too much, not playing to our attacking strengths, definitely being conservative and England failing to produce.
He'll overthink it and play 3 at the back. I'd GO FOR IT with 4-2-3-1/4-3-3.
