Football Italia on channel 4

Yes I loved it too, some fantastic matches on a Sunday afternoon and James Richardson is a funny guy.

Palma one of the top teams in the world at the time just disappeared in a financial scandal I recall.

Funny you should say that ...

As I’ve just bought this

Description
It was the deal of the century. British superstar Paul Gascoigne had joined Lazio and Channel 4 swooped to pick up live rights to Italian football for just £1.5 million. Serie A just happened to be the best league in the world and over the next decade millions would tune in to watch the biggest names on the planet. Saturday mornings were also about to be transformed with the launch of Gazzetta Football Italia. With the sharp wit of James Richardson allied to the dulcet tones of broadcasting legend Kenneth Wolstenholme, the show was an institution at the weekend. Having worked on the show since its inception Jonathan Grade gives a first-hand account of this iconic production. Golazzo: The Football Italia Years takes a nostalgic look back with some stories from behind the scenes in the days when Italian football ruled the world.

I really looked forward to this but, when it actually started, it made me realise just how slow and boring italian football could be. Brum fans are now enjoying something similar with karanka, judging by the comments theyve been making

They did but they are back and back in serie a

Some of my first footballing memories are watching Football Italia.

was it Sunday afternoon when matches were on? I had many an argument due to a 10 year old me wanting to stay in and watch the football instead of go to the garden centre

Yes, Sunday afternoon's

Was very exciting when channel 4 got Seria A. In a time when if you didn't have Sky, there was not a lot of football on.

Some of the games were terrible though...

I always remember marvelling at how many fans were at the big games.

Italian football is what the premiership is now, expect our game is faster and crowds are bigger.

The first ever game shown was a 3-3 . I was impressed as I was expecting nil each

Football Italia was a huge part of my growing up. The sunday afternoon matches literally got me through 5 years+ of going to my nannas every Sunday until I was 15 (more and more against my wishes, the older I got!).

It was the era before the internet and budget airlines, when football in Italy felt like a far flung, exotic and almost never reachable destination!

Transworld Sport on a Sunday morning too - remember that? I used to sneak downstairs and watch it at the crack of dawn before anyone else got up. 5 minutes football news, a bit of athletics and then some random sports I'd never heard of before!

Transworld Sport was brilliant as was Gazetta Football Italia. Seria A was full of superstar players then.
