Favourite Ashes Moments

Gotta be Stokes at Headingley. I was lucky enough to be there that day and the day before.

My “I was there” moment.

Amazing innings and incredible tension. The Lyon’s fumble. The poor reviews and missed chance for a wicket because the Aussies had wasted their reviews. Just incredible.

Headingley 1981 I was 14 and loved test cricket but after the 1st couple of days and what looked like an inevitable defeat me and a few mates arranged to go camping at the bottom of Captain Cooks monument.
I will never forget reading about Bothams heroics in the newspaper the next morning then sitting next to some blokes car listning to the radio as Bob Willis mopped up the Aussies innings.

I'm a relatively recent convert to the sport but surely Stokes at Headingley hasn't been bettered, Ashes or otherwise?

I was in the pub at the start of play with an Aussie who had been there the Saturday. He was insistent England would do it. I laughed it off, kept an eye on my phone over the next couple of pints, before rushing home 😂

Not mentioned yet? Boxing Day Test 2010, first day and still 'celebrating' Christmas - Aussies all out for 98. Also remember in 1998 (?) getting up to see a rare England win, with a Goughie hat trick, he was one of my sporting heroes at the time, less enamoured with him these days!

I watched that in a pub in NYC with a load of Aussies. Brilliant.

Weird how hardly anyone ever mentions the 2013 series, which we won comfortably 3-0.

Another memory, Flintoff running out Ponting with some awesome fielding in his final test to make the series safe for England in 2009.

I hate myself for saying this, but I am going to say an Aussie one.

Shane Warnes first ever Ashes ball to Gatting, it defied the laws of physics, never mind cricket and took his off stump. Never seen anything like it.

Seriously Warne himself bowled balls that moved further than that though, and took wickets with them. There was something about the occasion itself though, and the fact it was against a returning but ring-rusty England batting legend, who shouldn’t have got back in the team really. It was a significant moment but I’ve always thought “ball of the century” is going a bit far.

I can’t believe no one has mentioned anything from the 90s 😱
See my mention of Goughie’s hat trick. Aussies were phenomenal in the 90s, remember watching in awe as Gilchrist tore appart our bowling attack of Craig White, Cork and Caddick in 2001. Made 2005 all the more satisfying.
