I think where expectations are a little off is in terms of what Carrick is capable of.
The dramatic upturn in fortunes last year with basically the same set of players had us believing him to be an alchemist capable of getting unexpected improvements from any player, along with an unheralded team cohesion.
Which to a certain extent he did, but... that was starting off with a higher quality squad who regardless of form had in the main been playing together for long enough to know each others games pretty well.
This year he's having to start again from much further back, with the added disruption of not yet having a full and settled squad. And the rest of the division knows a bit more about how a Carrick team plays.
That's not too say we were kidding ourselves about his abilities - I don't think we were - but he's still learning, playing catch-up and having to do it in the face of a far less patient set of supporters.
This is disappointing, but not really surprising. I'm still optimistic though.
