Expanding the Riverside Stadium..

The Sunderland approach was ultimately a spectacular failure. You can give away as many free tickets as you want but how do people then afford the second and third match. The Riverside Stadium when built was a massive upgrade on the capacity at Ayresome Park - it was a giant leap forward and many said it was over ambitious.
We only fill the away section in the Premier. It is more like 200 average in Championship 2000 in Premier. Boro do give free tickets to schoolkids and others doing Foundation courses etc.
We should have better pricing I agree but then I am hoping that we can get 15 000 + next season as a feelgood bounce after COVID. The club/Warnock are making big efforts at reaching out at present and it would be superb if they paid off. They would like people to get involved in ways to make the concourses more welcoming etc. They do want the Boro to feel like OUR club.
Safe standing would be a great start.

And? We don’t need a bigger stadium at the moment. If we sell out and have waiting lists again then absolutely, let’s expand. Fingers crossed we get back to that level / era again soon.
make hay when the sun shines, build it and they will come.

Well with the treasury in the North and the mayor we should be looking to having larger capacity to attract these big North East events away from Newcastle. As if we had a 40k+ stadium we could host games for the 2030 world Cup etc plus host more musical gigs, rugby, boxing match and how about the darts bring duzza home 😂

Exactly

Interesting reading the different comments on this thread.

I remember when we were getting 5k at Ayresome people saying we would never get above 10k again.

Then when Rioch was getting into his stride 15k was seen as a bumper crowd.

A few months later 18k was unprecedented bonanza time.

Then all of a sudden we were looking to get in the top league and Ayresome could have sold out twice over for the Leicester match, I remember a big group of lads in the pub a couple of days before moaning they couldn’t get tickets.

Then under Lawrence we dipped down again to below 10k, and a lot of fans thought that was it, we will never see 15k again, never mind 20k.

Fast forward to Bryan Robson and the 30k Riverside under construction. Two comments very common at the time - ‘it will never get finished’ and ‘they’ll never fill that’.

The rest is history.

People respond to ambition.

Sure, but for how many years has the Riverside been at max capacity?

It would be nice to have people's art, poems, songs in writing scattered around the home concourses - all backgrounds and ages. Also some key landscapes/images from the Area - pretty and industrial. Some of the concourses are a bit like the inside of B & Q they don't have to be.

Our average going down under Southgate was 28.5k.

Under Karanka it was 30.5k.

Despite the urban myth that we have no supporters, I personally think those average relegation attendances are outstanding.

The overall average is bumped up because we usually always sold out when we played Man United or Liverpool but even in our last Premier League season there were games where we only had 27k.

I just hate how empty the stadium looks, especially when we're in the Championship.

Sure, so on that basis we would have had a 5k stadium.
Not really. I would be interested in seeing the median/mean age figures for our crowds in each League.
Buildings aren't cheap and you'll need more than one possible international to pay back the construction costs.
