Expanding the Riverside Stadium..

Yep. But I don't believe that Erimus was that well known in those days.
More controversially perhaps a friend that saw many of the entries found it hard to believe Riverside won. It did however make for a great neutral word that could easily be coupled with s sponsor name. I guess only Fiona Bell the Boro's PR consultant at the time would know the truth.

‘The Cellnet Erimus Stadium’

I remember it being the towns motto before Erimus housing came on the scene. But like most things to do with boro.. they weren’t really mentioned then.

I always suspected something fishy with the fans vote as I didn't know anyone who voted for the Riverside and it was also the blandest name of the lot. However like you have said it went well with the sponsor and I suspect given we were signing a 10 year naming rights deal with Cellnet that they would have had some input, money talks afterall.

It's a shame really as we're now stuck with the name and it doesn't give you the same positive feeling as Ayresome did as a name (although admittedly that's probably the rose tinted specs looking back).

The good old days when fans could decide the name of the stadium, next seasons kits.. but never the new badge.

For the record...I voted for Erimus

Don't get me started on that awful badge. They should have either kept the 1986 badge but changed the year or opened up some sort of fan consultation on a new design.

You're not going to please everyone doing it that way as we all have different preferences but even if some people who aren't as positive about any new design feel like they've had a say they would probably be less vitriolic in their opposition to the new design.

Sometimes I think it might be nice to weave the transporter into a design somehow as it's so synonymous with the area, one of the reasons I love that 1994 kit is the transporter imprinted in the fabric.
