European Super League to be announced tonight - 9:30pm

I get the reasons why people don’t want this to happen - I also don’t. However it’s a tad ironic that the money men who have spent the last 15 yrs ruining the game are getting upset that some bigger money men are going to ruin it further.

you can tell by the extreme reaction and threats thrown around and gvt involvement that for many this is less to do with football and all about the money!
Surely its all about money? If it was about football it would have been tabled as a European super league at the top of the football pyramid with relegstion/ promotion options. Not a league for founding members only.

What the FA should do now is with immediate effect ban Southgate from selecting any players at any team that has signed up to this deal same in Italy and Spain. FIFA should ban them from playing international football.
banning the players who CLEARLY don't know about it, isn't the way forward for me and only further punishes the hard working fan!

I read qite a few people saying football finances are bust anyway and it has all been about money even before this and that is totally true but two wrongs dont make a right. Also I am thinking this may be the kick people need to address the other issues in football. I know German league is pushing for salary caps which would help all clubs

No my point is the reaction is about money - the current lot lining their pockets are upset that it’s going to be taken away from them.

It's about money, & power. These big clubs want more money and they want more control. They want to self govern not be governed.

This is the embodiment of libertarianism in sport. We all know that corrupt mega club owners will not be able to self govern, they will in effect make it an open financial race with no moral or ethical decisions.

Any other market that allows this free market economics, with very little in the way of independent control goes one way. The small businesses are put out of business. If this goes ahead, or if UEFA are removed for a governance body controlled by the big clubs, then their will be a rationalisation of football. Smaller clubs will go bust or become semi-professional niche hobby clubs. The pyramid will disappear forever.

Capitalism always means that money follows money, unless you get very strong governance in place, and you have to fight to keep it in place and give it the teeth it needs. This is one of those moments, now you will always get capitalists like FatCat that can't see an issue with it, until it's too late, but history tells us what will happen if we back down. There are very few corner shops, or local fizzy drink manufacturers, or local businesses running transport. It's all national or global businesses that have bought out the small ones, or crushed them. That's middlesbrough's future if this isn't stopped.

What I'm trying to figure out in my head is.... how can these clubs "go back" to UEFA, etc... when they have resigned?

They must have contracts already signed for the Super League, so there is no going back

People trying to bring them back to the table for talks - seems pointless to me

It's like trying to get an ex-girlfriend / boyfriend to give you another chance.... proper small time

I think we should use every possible leverage we have including that preventing players involved, in playing for their country. Divide and conquer.

But why should Harry Kane be punished when he didn't even know his employer had done this? I would also expect to request a transfer and state he doesn't want to play for a club who wants to do this.

Players are punished for the actions of their clubs all the time.

Wigan's players and coaching staff didn't deserve administration and a points deduction, their owners did.

I'm fairly confident that no England player will be prevented from playing for England this summer though, even if this abomination isn't stopped.

I would agree with that TeaCider - if any action were to be taken against the players it would be from the start of the 2021/2022 season

Personally, I would ban any player that signs a new or renewed contract with these teams, from today onwards. Because then the player has made a decision to be a part of and tacitly support this sham.

Amazon prime have come out and said it’s nothing to with us.

it appears that already the so-called ESL is a toxic brand.

this could rival new coke as the worst ever PR disaster.

I also think uefa need to protect contracts of their teams, you can only sell to uefa sanctioned teams. Contracts might have to go long term to stop players running down contracts

another alternative is to turn player on clubs. Those players didn't sign contracts to play in this competition, it could be argued that they are not contractually bound to play in it. Inform the players as soon as they turn out in that sham of a competition then they will be banned from playing for their country. But offer legal support, with contract lawyers, to assist them with exiting their contracts.

In this way you are making the players hate the clubs for putting them into a competition without consultation, without any forewarning and against their ethics. It will turn players against these CEOs and owners, which it sounds like might already be the case.

If Amazon have distanced themselves from it then I'd expect Disney to do the same. Who does that leave?
Sky? Won't want the PR fallout.
BT? Same as above.
Terrestrial channels? Couldn't afford it.
BEIN? Not with the FIFA connections.

Looks like it could only head to a PPV model and that will fall flat on its ****.
