England v Hungary 7:45pm

‘Best group of players we’ve ever and he scraped to a final’

What about that side with Gerrard, Lampard, Beckham, Cole, Scholes, Rooney, Ferdinand, Terry etc?

How well did they do?

If Southgate loses his job it’s a joke an I hope England go out early in Qatar.

My take:

I've seen people complaining that England are playing CDMs all the time....I've explained that we have to, because we don't have the quality of defender to play without two CDMs. I've think I've been proven right tonight.

I've also seen people saying Maguire shouldn't be in the team. My argument was you have to have an organiser with experience in that back 4. First goal tonight, defending a freekick where we never had their players marked properly at any point. Stones isn't an organiser and never will be.

Final goal showed something else I've pointed out recently, which is that Walker isn't the player he was even a year ago, his pace would have got him back to put a slide tackle in for that 4th goal, but that pace has significantly dropped.

Can we all agree now, Southgate has been right all these years to play 2x CDMs and we don't have anywhere near the best squad in the world because the defence is poor?

Feels that way, to me. I think tonight is a bad for Southgate.
I think that was the moment my mates and I all felt like, whatever the project was, it wasn't going to work. And with hindsight, that might have been the wrong conclusion to draw, especially given what came after Southgates reign, but that's how it felt at the time.

Yes the Cardiff FA cup QF was a moment damaged him, and relegation too. But he struggled through those problems and limped on, and I remember being optimistic that with a year in the championship to rebuild, we would bounce right back to the prem. But the heavy defeat at home to West Brom burst that bubble, and it felt like it put the writing on the wall for him. It felt like something just wasn't quite right tactically and our performances were worse than they should be. Rightly or wrongly, I suspect lots of England fans feel like that right now.

This is the same team that beat Ukraine 4-0 in Rome in the European Championship so come the World Cup when at their peak we will be fine
Tonight’s result is poor but it’s not going to affect the WC
I don’t like Phillips though - too negative
