Elizabeth the Last

Taxpayers would still have to fund the redecorating of the palaces. Some Presidents have expensive taste. Or what else;
another new art gallery?
Flog them to billionaires?
Convert to flats (bolt holes for rich foreigners, usually unoccupied)?
They'll be taken over by the National Trust and paid for by subscription.

Subscription would also be an option for those wanting to maintain a monarch for their own use.

If everyone joined a union, we'd all have an "extra" day off every year.

Do you know that the UK have less bank holidays than most of the western world?
I did know that and governments, past and present, shudder at the thought of bringing us in line.

I've also been in a union since I was 16.

of course people will be happy with the day off, but it's an irrelevance in the scheme of things
Why is it, you wouldn't be getting an extra day off if it wasn't for the queen's jubilee.

Note: I haven't followed this thread since answering this morning and these might have already been addressed.

Will you be allowed to bring in a whistle? Just in case?

I will do it for you; feeble, thick as mince, imbecile ...

The latest Feb 22 Ispos poll said 22% would want the royal family abolished.

FMTTM poll 99.87.

Yes but the royal family aren't getting ditched any time soon and people aren't going to turn down a day off.
If people were offered the choice between one single extra day off and becoming a republic then that would be relevant.

A whole world of extra debate but the NT is not unkown to be a vehicle for the hoy palloy to get free digs.

Example Moulton Hall.

Flogged to the Trust by the owner who uses the place when not enjoying the delights of London. At one point they said you get to look around by appontment, although I never managed it. Now off the Trust Website.
Must be nice to have your Country Pile maintained for free and still have complete privacy.

No argument with this one at all. I'm not a member.

I don't if I am just being thick but I do think it is relevant. People asking to remove the monarchy and are more than happy to have the extra day because of her jubilee, surely that is having your cake and eating it?

Nothing against many of them personally though IMHO Liz should be the last. The immediate few: Anne, Charles, Andrew, Edward & possibly William & Harry can have a small manor house & grounds each somewhere... the rest gets taken back to form tourist attractions & history is updated / completed by listing all the negative royal associations too.

While we're at it House of Lords & titles, gone - changed to a more democratic / technocratic elected body to oversee control.. & FPtP voting system to go also...

For too long the UK has been governed by an insular group of similarly educated & socially blinkered clique that is more about who you know than what you have experienced or know - nepotistic cabal..

Down with the whole lot..
Couldn't agree more.
Other countries manage to have a royal family more in keeping with the 21st century.

Let them eat cake.
We're on the way there with millions more working families being driven into poverty.

How are they having their cake? The monarchy isn't being removed.

It's more akin to not having the cake you wanted but accepting a biscuit that's been offered.

We're getting in a bit of a pointless debate here (my fault really)but what are you suggesting, people asking their employer to come in still because they don't approve of the basis of the holiday? People like days off. It's like Christmas and religion, people might not believe in God but they like presents and nice food.
Having a day off doesn't take away anyone's views on the matter

To twist figures another way Mar 22 (done after your Feb 22 survey) Ispos poll says that 56% of the UK population don't think Britain would be worse if royal family abolished

Yeah, you are right about the pointless debate, neither of us is explaining ourselves very well and I am going to leave it.

Cue the cap doffers mentioning how much money the Royals bring into this country via tourism. Turf them out of Buck Palace and turn it into a University, put all thier jewels and heirlooms on show in museums. Hereditary privelage/wealth is a disease.
Great idea, because more universities pedalling **** degrees to gullible young people in exchange for massive debts is exactly what we need.

I never trust polls. Or statistics for that matter.

I was wrong on the FMTTM poll it should have been 99.32%
