Dominic Shaw leaves the Gazette for The Northern Echo

I have direct Twitter messages from last week him telling me he’s a man United fan but sort of becoming a Boro convert since reporting on us
How strange. Always seemed like a massive Boro fan to me. I went to sixth form with him as well and we often chatted about Boro.

Me neither but they are Teessides second team

Always has been.
Can you really have a second team that plays in the top two tiers if you do?
A preference for a foreign team, or lower league, or non league I get, but no more than that surely?

I guess like a player he is a professional doing his job as a reporter.
To be honest Craig is a really nice guy and always very helpful.
They have a harder job now because they work from home so have none of the benefits of working alongside colleagues and working together on leads etc - it must feel very isolating I think.

The Gazette like a lot of newspapers I imagine is struggling financially. The website I imagine gets lots of views but not many subscriptions and the paper copy is probably at 15% of what it was 30 years ago with much less revenue advertising - think of all the private car ads there used to be and now there are none.

I believe it is printed in Sheffield now and the offices moved out of the main part of the Town. That makes me think there has been serious cuts in journalism.

The office did move out of the town centre (Borough Road) over to Hudson Quay, near the ground.

That halved in size, then again.... now the Gazette don't have an office at all.

Everyone works from home.

No, Reach group no longer have any offices nationally - following covid it is working from home for the entire network - that leaves the workforce and sales staff using their own homes and heating and phones etc. It is a different world.
There is still a major printing operation on Riverside Park, printing lots of papers and magazines there in Middlesbrough.

Great move for Dom Shaw - a top reporter and really accomplished athlete. Look forward to reading his Boro reports in the Echo again - For my money this is definitely the Gazette's loss but our gain that he is back reporting on our club again.

I did the Great North Run before covid and Dom Shaw beat me by about 2 hours!!!🏃‍♂️

He isn’t a Sunderland fan. He’s a man United fan but says since he’s started reporting on Boro is becoming very much attached to us and wanted us to beat United in the cup last year
has to say that or leave the job lol

The Gazette has been an absolute shambles since the 're-shuffle.'

Not a fan of the coverage we've had for the past few years. I use the word coverage lightly.

Glad Dom's writing again. Excellent writer that rights passionately and has a great grasp of the Boro.

Apologies I did not know the Gazette has no offices at all, that would add futher to the cost cutting described.

I am sure someone on here said the Gazette was getting printed in Sheffield at one stage and was printed early morning hence no longer the Evening Gazette - the printing must have moved back to Middlesbrough's Riverside Park if what they said was true.

The Gazette really isn't a thing anymore. Its a small brand owned by a huge plc staffed by relatively low-paid professionals trying to make their way in the game. I have nowt against Craig Johns but he's not of the ilk of Gazette writers of years gone by (by that I mean big Boro fans like Paylor, Tallentire, Vickers etc), that's not his fault, its just the way it is and he is being paid to do a job. If Paylor didn't do his nostalgic freelance pieces the whole footballing arm of the Gazette would die entirely I reckon.

As for discussion/opinion, the Boro Breakdown is as good as it gets at present I'd say, alongside Twitter for Breaking News. They're all younguns though, which bizarrely means they haven't actually experienced many good times as Boro fans. :(

It’s never Port Vale is it? Always Man Utd or Liverpool.
I always think if you were going to be a glory supporter and never go, why not Benfica, Boca Jnrs, Real Madrid?
