Wow, that's some story that!My Grandparents lived in Slaggy Island back in the day and my Granny was always involved with stuff going on at The Peter's Church and School. One one occasion she was asked to organise a Pie and Pea Supper for a young kid who was good at football but his family couldn't afford any kit. She duly organised said Pie and Pea Supper which raised enough to get the kid his first proper kit and football boots. Years later after my Dad had organised moving her into Nazareth House and saving any personal stuff to hand down the line. Following a conversation we had about footy and stuff one day, he went upstairs on a rummage and when he came back down he showed the the stuff my Granny had kept over the years, a receipt for the pies and peas, a record of the takings for the night and a thank you letter from Head Master Fr Skillen, passing on the thanks from the Mannion family for buying their son Wilf his first proper football kit.
