Djed Spence extension activated!

Spence played well against Leicester, objectively.

Comparing his form under warnock with Jones under Wilder isn't a like for like comparison. As for stats. Pah!

Spence will go on and be a pl level player. I don't think there is much doubt about that. Given a choice I would rather it was with us. Unfortunately, due to his mismanagement that isn't going to happen.

He was pants!!?? Are you just making nonsense up for the sake of it.
Dear me :rolleyes:o_O

Ok, so pants might be a bit harsh but you only had to look at the live match threads on here to see the constant valid criticism he was getting. He wasn’t playing very well at all. Consistently. The odd acceptable game or decent run down the wing every 3 or 4 matches wasn’t acceptable. He wasn’t performing anywhere near the level he is now, not even close, for the last season he was with us. Anyone who thinks he was is maybe looking back with rise tinted spectacles.

Excellent business by us, We have either a on form Spence in Wilders system or £20+ million for a player that frustrated the life out of us! Incredible

Has anyone established if Spence signed an extension of his own free will or did we exercise an option we had to extend his contract?

I've said a few times I'd like to compare his stats v Jones.

Not the obvious ones, goals and assists, but his range of passing, distance covered, defensive numbers etc.

We all think Jones is a better player, but I'd like to see their numbers side by side.

Jonny I think someone posted some comparable stats earlier in this thread or maybe on another! Or maybe I am misremembering. Glad to be of help😏

They were in a video someone posted. Can't remember which thread but I think the gist of it was Spence edged the defensive stats and Jones was superior on all the attacking ones.

He's just above average defensively and well below average attacking this season according to the stats. But underneath that, he has everything he needs to be a top player if he can improve the mental aspect of his game. He's quick, strong and has good technical ability - a lot of things that are hard/impossible to train into people. The fact he's performing well now is great for us because we hold all the cards going into the summer.

I think he'll go on to have a good career but I think cashing in on him now is the best thing to do. He never settled in the area, he isn't great going forward (which is important for the way we play), there are questions over his attitude and there is a lot of hype around him which means we could probably get an inflated fee for him. Plus, we have Issiah Jones, who I think is just as exciting of a prospect.

Also worth remembering that Spence is quite a lot younger.

Although it feels like he's been around a long time, he is basically now the same age Jones was when Jones made his first appearance.

The biggest criticism ive read regarding Spence is that "he hasn't kicked on", from those daft enough to think young players' progression is usually a smooth process

20mil-25mil and I'd drive him. Then add a sell on clause of 15-20%. He would only need one good season and his value will treble or more (throw in an England cap).

You'd think he will be even better with a top coach and given licence to bomb forward in the prem. It could be 'easier' than in the champo as so many better players around him.

I get that a sell on clause comes at a cost. Its usually a lower fee or amount up front as your effectively gambling on him becoming really good and getting money down the line.

We don't wonna sell for 25mil and in 2 years he's signing for City for 100mil and England's back up RB. I know it's 'ifs and buts' but just look at Southampton with Bale. They actually had a the sell on clause bought out for 5mil..... Doh😂
Don't feel sorry for Southampton, they are another club that wiped debts and then became the top flight club they are now by using the admibistration process in a convuluted way, with linked holding companies

I think we picked him up for nothing from Fulham on a 2yr deal? I'm presuming they won't get anything?

Anyone heard about any strange clauses they have? I'd hate to pay those parachute payment feckers anything.

Spence is only a year younger, and has had 50 more games at this level than Jones, and before this year, and he also has been through a decent academy at Fulham, and then part of ours (also decent). He's had an awful lot more experience of "proper" football I would say, even though a year younger.

They both have more time to develop of course, but at the minute I see more of a future for Jones, and seemingly so does Wilder.

Can't comment on their attitudes as I don't know either of them, but Jones has always looked extremely keen in a Boro shirt, and Spence not so much, but I've not criticised either, as they're both young and hopefully both have a long way to go.

Fair play to the lad. He's found his own path and will no doubt benefit from it. What ever mistakes he may or may not have made, he has clearly learnt from them and taken chances/opportunities as they have come along.

He moved from Fulham to get ahead of the Sessegnon brothers
at boro under Woodgate he got his chance against Tottenham (which worked massively in his favour)

despite wanting to play at right back Warnock played him further up the pitch and he developed that ££££ side to his game

moving to Forest with the chance to be mr week in and week out.. he took, he worked at it and it's paid off

he's been fortunate to be able to show his talent at those levels.. when folks talk about that 'bit of luck' that is needed as a footballer, I think he has had it in those cup games under Woodgate for Spurs and against Arsenal and Leicester for Forrest..

No wonder MFC wanted £15m for him in January. With a 2.5 year contract he is worth a lot more than 1.5 year one - if anything I would say £18m is realistic. A 21 year old player with at least 10 years ahead of him and better than 50/50 chance of making it in the Premier League.

He can't get in our team because we have another excellent player in his position.

The best thing that could happen to spence is Chris wilder , he’d have him at his best if his talent is genuine . Still , we can do a lot with the money we get .

Fantastic work by the club, a few years ago we would have probably sold him last summer for 200k. Realistically could get 10-15 million in the summer for him if he keeps up his form which would be huge if we don’t go up

They would miss him, but they have a few other options, albeit against us in December they didn't do a great deal, which is good.

I don't quite get the hype of Spence mind, he's had like 1 goal and 1 assist for Forest and for us he was underwhelming. He does look to be in his best from now though.

I don't think we would even get 20m for Jones, who is better than Spence, so I can't see a way in which we would we get 20m for a player who can't make our team.

I'd laugh my nuts off if we did get 20m mind

There are quite a few areas we could drastically improve with 20m to spend.
Spence is a fragile being. Obviously he is 'understood' by Steve Cooper ; who, in fairness seems to be able to tap into the psyche of certain players and get the best from them. Spence is a vulnerable soul and needs a certain kind of 'something' to get the best from him...whether that is unconditional love & admiration despite his errors......then maybe Cooper is offering him this...when his big move comes if his new premiership manager doesnt offer that same approach then Spence will flounder ; because he is fragile. Or his belief is.

Yes, fair play to Cooper.
I'm struggling to see a loser in what's happening with Spence just now.

In the summer we had fans offering to carry him to another club if they offered £5 million for him. We win as we'll certainly get much more for him now.
Spence is clearly happier.
Forest are getting the benefit of his improved form. He won't stay there, but they've done well out of the loan.

Everyone's happy?
