It's a bit vanilla for me, but each to their own. It can be uncomfortable watching older programmes though.Only fools and horses is riddled with it, best programme ever made

Most of them did. But the cenotaph should not have been defaced under any circumstancesIt seems quite a few people would rather disprove/deny than condemn I hope that's not the case, these memorials should never be defaced, why can't people just protest peacefully
So just to be clear are you saying Churchill wasn't a racist or he was our racist not their racist so that's ok?
So it is the Chinese people you consider evil rather than the Chinese Communist Party, br14!"I think we shall have to take the Chinese in hand and regulate them. I believe that as civilized nations become more powerful they will get more ruthless, and the time will come when the world will impatiently bear the existence of great barbaric nations who may at any time arm themselves and menace civilized nations. I believe in the ultimate partition of China—I mean ultimate. I hope we shall not have to do it in our day. The Aryan stock is bound to triumph. "
Did he actually say those words? Perhaps. They were captured by a journalist in an interview from what I read. 1902 was a different time. Churchill was 28 and the British Empire was at its height. Even so they're remarkably prescient.
As for Lincoln, he was trying to get the laws on slavery over turned. He might have said anything to win votes. You don't climb a mountain without making the first step.
I thought that it had been substantiated that the Cenotaph wasn't defaced yesterday?Attention grabbing? The cenotaph in London was defaced yesterday. Regardless of the cause this is not on and there is no condoning it. None. It’s was built in memory of the hundreds of thousands of men and women who have died serving this country. Men and women, of all colours and religions.
And on the anniversary of D-Day. A day when the remaining few who fought in the Second World War could have visited and paid their respects to their fallen comrades. Some of them won’t get that chance again.
I’m saying that if it wasn’t for Churchill we would have lost the war and millions in Britain would not exist now because their ancestors would have been rounded up, gassed and burnt because they were if the wrong race. That clear enough for you?

You’re right we’ll never know but Hitler only ‘started’ on the Jews and was after the gypsies next ( already began ) and wasn’t sympathetic to the disabled . Where would he have stopped and whittled it down to showpiece Arian’s ?Who knows what would have happened if Churchill had not been Prime Minister, someone else may have taken different actions that meant that millions of lives were saved, whilst not degenerating Churchill’s influence the idea that he was solely responsible for the outcome of the war overlooks so many significant other factors, Hitler’s racial prejudice was against the Jewish race, in 1940 the Jewish population of Britain was around 375k at present there are around 280k Jews in the UK, the mass immigration of none whites from the British colonies didn’t start until the 1950’s.
Don't think he took too kindly to Russians. You’re right we’ll never know but Hitler only ‘started’ on the Jews and was after the gypsies next ( already began ) and wasn’t sympathetic to the disabled . Where would he have stopped and whittled it down to showpiece Arian’s ?
Russian winter didn’t take to kind to his soldiers and fixed him HopesoDon't think he took too kindly to Russians.
I am and I can't no. I'm not proud of it, obviously, but I reckon I have. I've certainly pre judged people on the basis of where they come from (not always negatively at all but still) and that's the very definition of prejudice. It's where the word comes from. It's interesting that it's really tough to draw the line. If not impossible. As fatcat is pointing out the line has moved significantly in the past 40 years. Is there anybody on here over 40 who can say hand on heart that they have never been racist in their whole life?
It was, and some little scrote tried to set fire to the Union Flag as well.I thought that it had been substantiated that the Cenotaph wasn't defaced yesterday?
It is not the physical flag that is the issue, but the sentiment behind burning itI do find it funny when people get so angry about a flag
yes that was exactly my point - what was perfectly normal and acceptable growing up is now abhorrent to the nation we have now become. Still along way to go though!!I am and I can't no. Spot on Fatyes that was exactly my point - what was perfectly normal and acceptable growing up is now abhorrent to the nation we have now become. Still along way to go though!!
It's a little short sighted to say without Churchill we would have lost the war. We 'may' have lost the war, someone else may have stood up to the plate and done a better job, it's all speculation. All we know is we did win the war with him. But we shouldn't ignore his flaws, unbalanced idolisation of anyone isn't really helpful.I’m saying that if it wasn’t for Churchill we would have lost the war and millions in Britain would not exist now because their ancestors would have been rounded up, gassed and burnt because they were if the wrong race. I did wonder at the reality of this. The centaph photos I have seen shared were with a bright blue sky....it's been cloudy all week.I thought that it had been substantiated that the Cenotaph wasn't defaced yesterday?
rationality and objectivity are the victims of sentimentalityIt is not the physical flag that is the issue, but the sentiment behind burning it
