Defacing the Cenotaph and Churchill statue

Most of them did. But the cenotaph should not have been defaced under any circumstances

Did he actually say those words? Perhaps. They were captured by a journalist in an interview from what I read. 1902 was a different time. Churchill was 28 and the British Empire was at its height. Even so they're remarkably prescient.

As for Lincoln, he was trying to get the laws on slavery over turned. He might have said anything to win votes. You don't climb a mountain without making the first step.

I thought that it had been substantiated that the Cenotaph wasn't defaced yesterday?

Who knows what would have happened if Churchill had not been Prime Minister, someone else may have taken different actions that meant that millions of lives were saved, whilst not degenerating Churchill’s influence the idea that he was solely responsible for the outcome of the war overlooks so many significant other factors, Hitler’s racial prejudice was against the Jewish race, in 1940 the Jewish population of Britain was around 375k at present there are around 280k Jews in the UK, the mass immigration of none whites from the British colonies didn’t start until the 1950’s.

You’re right we’ll never know but Hitler only ‘started’ on the Jews and was after the gypsies next ( already began ) and wasn’t sympathetic to the disabled . Where would he have stopped and whittled it down to showpiece Arian’s ?

I am and I can't no. I'm not proud of it, obviously, but I reckon I have. I've certainly pre judged people on the basis of where they come from (not always negatively at all but still) and that's the very definition of prejudice. It's where the word comes from. It's interesting that it's really tough to draw the line. If not impossible. As fatcat is pointing out the line has moved significantly in the past 40 years.

It was, and some little scrote tried to set fire to the Union Flag as well.

Remember when Charlie Gilmour (son of David Gilmour from Pink Floyd) was sentenced to 16 months in prison for swinging on the flags on the cenotaph? Lets see if the rules are applied consistently here...

yes that was exactly my point - what was perfectly normal and acceptable growing up is now abhorrent to the nation we have now become. Still along way to go though!!

It's a little short sighted to say without Churchill we would have lost the war. We 'may' have lost the war, someone else may have stood up to the plate and done a better job, it's all speculation. All we know is we did win the war with him. But we shouldn't ignore his flaws, unbalanced idolisation of anyone isn't really helpful.
