Defacing the Cenotaph and Churchill statue

all those soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom to fight fascism and genocide. they fought the good fight and payed the ultimate price. they certainly didn’t do it to protect statues of racists or to stop pieces of stone being painted on.. get a grip. respect their lives by fighting against fascism and against racism. help in anyway you can x
The pieces of stone are one of the ways that people can show their appreciation and give thanks they are a huge symbol of the work they did, to paint on them and desecrate them is beyond disrespectful and those protesting ought to be rightfully ashamed of themselves, there is no need to vandalise any way memorial.

Did they do it so people could throw things at the police? What about setting fire to things? Damaging other's property?

Stop making excuses for people breaking the law.

“all those soldiers who gave their lives for our freedom to fight fascism”

well they all seem very happy and honoured to march past this “piece of stone” every year regardless of age or ill health and will continue to do so until they are no longer able btw the piece of stone as you call it is the cenotaph ( empty tomb) and it represent all this nations war dead it.
Defacing that monument is nothing short of disgraceful I’m amazed anyone would think otherwise.

Why can't we say no to racism without defacing things?

WE can. A tiny minority of idiots can’t, and it’s those cretins who steal the headlines and allow people to be easily distracted from the argument.

The fact that some people are more angered by the graffiti and vandalism and are more focussed on that, than the main movement, is sad. This thread has wandered down the predictable path of not-so-subtly painting all protestors with the same brush, despite 10s possibly 100s of thousands not vandalising, not graffitiing, not attacking the police.

Unless I’ve missed it, and I can’t be bothered to read back through the whole thread now, I’ve still not seen one person defend the graffiti of the cenotaph. (Some have questioned whether it happened, which is understandable given the police tweet) Everybody seems to be singing off the same hymn sheet though, that it’s abhorrent, so why keep going back to it? You are preaching to the congregation - vandalism is wrong and should be punished as such. Can we not move on from that now? It seems a bit odd to fixate on some acts of mindless, offensive vandalism, for days, when there is a much bigger discussion raging.

If a small fly lands in your big bowl of soup, you don't just pick out the fly, you discard the whole bowl. That's why it's so critically important that in order to get a message across successfully, with as many people on board as possible, you can't have the flies; they ruin the whole thing. I'm not saying it's right to focus on the fly to distract from the entire restaurant, I'm just saying how vital it is because to do otherwise stops other people coming in

Really? I just pick out the fly and eat the rest of the soup.

One thing noticeable looking at the thread counts on the board. There seems to be interest in artefacts than the plight of a section of the population.
There isn't though. I am yet to see one person on this board who doesn't agree that black lives matter. But attacking the police and other people, damaging property, historical artefacts, war memorials and setting fire to things is not the answer.

...attacking the police and other people, damaging property, historical artefacts, war memorials and setting fire to things is not the answer.
Then why not simply say that you applaud the actions of the tens of thousands of people who have gathered together peacefully to protest the inequalities inherent in our society. Simply say that it is not good enough when high profile people like the Prime Minister dog whistle to racists to grab their votes. Or does that stick in your throat? So maybe highlight something you think will distract, the actions of a few idiots from the extremes of the protest. I think that would be a pretty scummy thing to do don't you @uncle_rico? Like insinuating that anyone who votes Tory is a racist or apologist for racism perhaps...

Good point, 1 moment of idiocy from someone getting too enraged to engage, should not be more important than 400 years of slavery and the countless lives lost or limited in opportunity from it. Of course, if this country had accepted and owned it's imperial and slave trading background with a little more dignity no one would be getting enraged enough to do silly things.
