You when you sometimes wake up in the middle of the night and your brain starts have wierd and wandering conversatiuons with you? happened this morning and me an the brain had a vigorous debate over which song we thought had the deepest and most meaningful lyrics.

Early contenders were Barbie girl and baby Shark do do dooo

We them considered Bruce Springsteen's The River or Thunder Road. The Beatles Elanor Rigby was included but eventually Brain and I concluded that it was John Lennon's Imagine.

Any other contenders?

For me, it's Cat Stevens, Father and Son.
My dad didn't settle in oz when we arrived in Oz when I was a fifteen year old in 69 and he returned to England alone
by the time I was nineteen.

Those lyrics remind me so much of the talks that he and I had many times before he departed and to this day,
long after his death, those lyrics still have so much meaning to me and always will.

RIP Dad. You are sadly missed but will never be forgotten.

She didn't write it of course, but agree her version knocks spots off every other one I've ever heard. Stunning.

Not the deepest/most meaningful lyric, but my favourite opening line is by Martin Stephenson & The Daintees: "All I wanted was a piece of the cake and judging by your face you've eat it all."

Credit to Eric Bogle.

I like "I'm going to put a bar in the back of my car and drive myself to drink." Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

Songs I love that always evoke emotion from me are Tom Jones ‘Green Grass of Home‘ and Terry Jacks ‘Seasons in The Sun’, for personal reasons, but one I remember that always touches me mainly due to the lyrics is this one by Sting.

Frightened Rabbits - Floating in the Forth (few friends gone too soon)
I Am Kloot - Northern Skies (losing someone closest to me)
Biffy - Machines (mixture of the above)

I can hardly bear the sight of lipstick
On the cigarettes there in the ashtray
Lying cold the way you left them
But at least your lips caressed them
While you packed
Or the lip-print on a half-filled cup of coffee
That you poured and didn't drink
But at least you thought you wanted it
That's so much more than I can say for me

After three full years of marriage
It's the first time that you haven't made the bed
I guess the reason we're not talking
There's so little left to say we haven't said
While a million thoughts go racing through my mind
I find I haven't said a word
From the bedroom the familiar sound
Of our baby's crying goes unheard

On the cigarettes there in the ashtray

Amazing lyricist is Elvis.

One of my favourites Veronica, or tramp the dirt down.

In The Ghetto by The King

As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)
And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It is another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
(In the ghetto)
People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me
Are we too blind to see?
Do we simply turn our heads
And look the other way

I’m not a big lyrics guy. But these lyrics always sticks with me is from Cut Here by the Cure

But how how many times can I walk away and wish "If only"
But how many times can I talk this way and wish "If only"
Keep on making the same mistake
Keep on aching the same heartbreak
I wish "If only"
But "If only"
Is a wish too late
